Buckley Honors Manhasset Athletes

On Monday, June 11, Buckley Country Day School held its annual Red and Blue Banquet at which upper school students were recognized for outstanding contributions to their respective spring athletic teams. Spirits ran high as both coaches and competitors recalled highlights from the season. Congratulations to all.

On Friday, June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., the community is invited to see this year’s Senior Frolic in the Manhasset High School gymnasium. The co-chairs of this year’s Frolic—Caroline Kenlon, Judy Pegno, and Joanne Goldberg—along with many parents of the Class of 2013, are making this another memorable event for the graduating seniors. Junior parents available to assist with the walk-thru, should email Elene Farrell or Connie Parsons at mhsclass2014@yahoo.com.

The results of the school district budget vote are:
Total votes:  5,157

No:  1,451
Manhasset residents successfully passed the budget with a super majority Yes vote of 71.86%.

Sports

Four months into her freshman year, Tara Belinsky was approached by Track and Field throwing coach Russ Anbinder, asking if she would be interested in throwing the shot put. Like most Manhasset High School girls, she had grown up playing PAL youth lacrosse and planned to play lacrosse for Manhasset. Even though she didn’t know much about the shot put, she decided to give it a try during that freshman indoor season. That first season, Belinsky qualified and medaled at the NYS Indoor State Championships, setting off a series of events that no one could have expected.

Ever since her first practice throw of the eight-pound shot put, it has been a steady progression resulting in first place at the 2013 New York State and Federation Championship in shot put with a PR of 44' 3" at Middletown High School on June 8. Tara has now medaled in three of the four State Championships she has qualified for. She goes into next year as the number-one ranked shot putter in New York State.

Last year, the Auburndale/Bayside Tigers defeated the Manhasset Rebels, 2-1, in the Arch Capital Group Cup final. Manhasset returned the favor this year in the ENY Upper 90 Cup final on June 2 at Stringham Park in LaGrange by defeating Auburndale/Bayside by the same 2-1 score.

During the postgame celebration, the coaches of the friendly rivals, miles apart in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), considered having the rubber match next year—maybe in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) State Open Cup final?
