Commissioner Tom Maimone receives the ball from Manager Frank Messina of the Bulldogs.

The Manhasset Men's Softball League began its season with a bang, adding a new club to the existing four clubs. The new club, the Bulldogs, is managed by Frank Messina. They opened the season Sunday, Oct. 20, with a highly competitive double-header against a legacy club, the Wallbangers. The first game was an explosion of runs, going into extra innings before the Wallbangers prevailed at 17-15. The Bulldogs regrouped and won the second game, stranding the Bangers' tying run at third base in the last inning with some key defensive plays. At the other field, the first place Sambucas took two from last year's champ, the Sportsmen. The Mid-Life Crisis did not play, since having 5 clubs forces one club to receive a "bye" each week.

The Bulldogs fielded well behind the pitching of Drew LeBenne. Other players contributing include Steve Panzik, a well-known athlete and former crew coach at Manhasset High School, Sean Diskin, Greg Zammit, Kevin Conniff and Sean Haggerty. The Wallbangers were paced by the exemplary fielding and torrid hitting of shortstop John Cafasso. Kevin Ward, Frank Naclerio and Steve Marino had good games at the plate and in the field.

Now that the league has grown to five clubs, it is actively seeking a sixth Manhasset club to eliminate the "bye" in the schedule. Several years ago the league consisted of six clubs and there was a waiting list of new players seeking to enter the league.

The league features double-headers on Sunday mornings in the spring and fall. The league is strictly local and has served Manhasset continuously since 1974. If you are interested in playing, contact Commissioner Tom Maimone at 627-0667, or email to tommaimone@aol.com.
