Congratulations are in order for Manhasset Senior David Knowles on his recent selection as the News 12 Scholar Athlete. Among David's accomplishments, provided by one of his track coaches, Steve Steiner, are the following facts:
At the Nassau County Indoor Track & Field State Qualifier on Feb. 11, David qualified for the NYSPHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 1600m.
He will compete at the State meet in Ithaca, NY on March 7.
David led the Manhasset squad to a third-place finish at the County B Championships held Feb. 8, earning All-County honors in the same event in addition to anchoring the County Champion 4x800m relay team.
David also gained recognition at our Conference Championships on Jan. 23 where he lead Manhasset to a strong second place finish, winning the 1600m, placing second in the 3200m, and anchoring the victorious 4x800m relay team.
Over the course of his 3 and a half years, David has earned multiple All-Division, All-Conference, and All-County honors, while qualifying for the State Championships on six separate occasions.
David's resume demonstrates his commitment to personal growth through service as well as his ability to excel in diverse endeavors.
An active member of both the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society, Dave, who also serves as an academic tutor and English peer responder, was recently awarded the prestigious Service and Citizenship Award, the highest honor the school awards for service to the community.
David also works as a staff writer and senior editor of the school newspaper and carries the responsibilities of lead tenor in the Kinsmen and Select Ensemble - the former of which was named Best Men's Choral Group at the Virginia Beach National Music Festival in 2007 and 2008. Dave's musical acumen also led to his selection as a member of the All-County choir four times!
Despite his hectic scholastic calendar, David has continued his commitment to the Boy Scouts of America, taking on numerous leadership positions, including his current role as Junior Assistant Scout Master.
Steve Steiner states, "It has truly been an honor and privilege to work with a young man who has been so steadfastly focused on achieving excellence in every facet of his life, while always maintaining an attitude of humility. David possesses a maturity that belies his age and experience. This has enabled him to achieve great success as a scholar, athlete, and leader. He always gives 100 percent, never complains, and encourages others to achieve. Despite his many athletic awards and achievements, David is best defined by his reputation, amongst peers and faculty alike, as an honest, sincere, and empathetic young man, tireless worker, and selfless leader. His efforts are most certainly deserving of recognition."
News 12 visited Manhasset Secondary School on March 9 to interview David, the principal, the athletic director, his coaches and some of his teachers.
