Ruth E. Montgomery, nee Sherman, died in her 91st year, to be with the Lord on Feb. 4, 2009. Born in Glendale, NY, she resided for many years in Englewood, FL and she loved being a Floridian. She recently lived in Southbury, CT. In addition to being a loving mother, she was a working mom with the Bankers Trust Corporation before it was fashionable, and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her children Gregg and Dorothy Montgomery of Plandome Manor; Gay Schefcik of Lakeville, MN; Gail and Paul Holub, of Oxford, CT and Glenn and Suzanne Montgomery of Gulf Breeze, FL. She is survived by nine grandchildren, Douglas and Matthew Holub; Brian, Tracy, Adam and Ryan Montgomery; Kristina, Suzanne and Steven Schefcik. Granddaughter-in-law Jennifer Kotkin Holub and great-grand dog Maybel. She was predeceased by her husband Harold Montgomery; her parents Maryellen and Frederick Sherman; her son-in-law John Schefcik and her siblings Eugene and Everett Sherman and Doris Reimer. Arrangements were handled by Martin A. Gleason Funeral Home, LLC, 10-25 150th Street, Whitestone, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Lordship Community Church in Stratford, CT, or the Masonic Brotherhood Fund in her name.
Longtime Plandome resident Robert E. King, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and good friend to many, died peacefully with his family at his side on February 6, 2009 at the age of 78. Born in Brooklyn, he was a lifelong New Yorker who graduated from St. John's University and worked at the New York Telephone Company for 40 years. He was a proud family man who built a legacy of children and grandchildren to follow him.
In his retirement, he enjoyed life's simple pleasures - playing golf, gardening, reading and spending time with his family, especially his precious grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife, Alice; his son Robert Jr. and his wife Jodie of Greenwich, CT; his son Chris and his wife Nancy of New York; his daughter Elizabeth King of Syosset; his daughter Katherine and her husband Kevin O'Connor of Fairfield, CT; and his seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Robert III and Caroline King, Christopher Jr. and Matthew King; and Claire and Jack O'Connor. His funeral service was held at Saint Mary's Church in Manhasset. Donations in his memory may be sent to Island Harvest or the Inner City Scholarship Fund.
