The Manhasset High School varsity wrestling team's hard work led to success at the conference qualifiers at Plainedge High School on Feb. 14. The team had tournament champions for the first time since it returned to Division I (large school) competition.
The three who took first in their respective weight classes were senior captain Nick Aloia at 189 pounds, junior co-captain Nick Fera at 140 pounds and his brother, eighth grader Mike Fera at 96 pounds.
Also placing were Alexander Ardito at 135 pounds and Grant Weiss at 103 pounds. Almost every team member won a match and all battled hard in an extremely competitive environment. Ty Adams, Jack Ruggiero, Matt Guild, Steven Fratello, Max Kraus, Justin Erb, Frazer Kinsley all came close to placing with hard-fought matches. Co-captain Rob Reichenbach was sidelined with an injury.
Nick Aloia, Alexander Ardito and the Fera brothers will move on to the Section 8 D1 Championships. Section 8, which comprises Nassau County, is one of the elite sections in New York. Its wrestlers placed second overall in the state tournament last year. Coaches Erik Uellendahl and Nick Vlahos should be very proud of their team's performance, and should be commended for both the demands they placed on their grapplers and the long hours they put in. With only 16 members on the team, the coaches made the extra effort to coordinate multiple practices with other teams to provide competition for their wrestlers - it certainly paid off!
