On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the MHS Boys Swim Team competed in their last dual meet of the season versus the fourth ranked team in Nassau County, Wantagh. The competition was a home meet for Manhasset held at a neutral site (Great Neck North) in front of a capacity crowd. On this night the home team recognized seniors Max Smitham, Brian Tam, Paul Faglione, Stephen Cobos, Ty Louis, Mike Yee, Richie Tortora and Kip Usher, at their final high school dual meet. The anticipated showdown between the two rivals was well worth the wait (the contest was rescheduled several times due to weather) as both teams displayed strong efforts throughout the contest. The meet was like a well-played chess match. Wantagh gained an edge in the distance freestyle events, IM and diving and Manhasset countered by winning the sprint freestyle events and the specialty strokes (butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke). Manhasset was able to overcome a 10 point deficit in the back half of the meet by taking first and third in 200 Free Relay, cutting the lead to four points. The deficit remained four points going into the last event of the meet (400 Free Relay). In a closely contested race, with the SRO crowd on its feet, Manhasset finished first and third to secure the victory 94-92.

The winning relay team of Brian Tam, Stephen Cobos, Paul Faglione and Max Smitham set a new school record 3:35.30, eclipsing the old record of 3:38.02 set in 2006 by Alex Smitham, John Keneally, Jimmy Mulderrig and Brian Cogan.
