On behalf of the board of directors of the Manhasset Women's Coalition Against Breast Cancer, I would like to thank the chairpersons of the many fund raising events that we run in an effort to fund breast cancer research and education as well as our community outreach programs. This past June our "Team Manhasset" participated in the LI 2Day walk for Breast Cancer out in Suffolk County. This event was chaired by board member Connie Parsons. This team raised a record amount of funds to support our Outreach program, which is chaired by board member Dorthy Forte. In August, Young's Fine Wines and Spirits hosted a wine tasting for the community with hors d'oeuvres provided by Sage. This was due to the efforts of Ann Demeri. In September, Rose Ann Casey and Lorna Durante chaired our annual "Swing for A Cure" tennis event at Nassau Country Club. This is always a great event for players of all levels. Our annual "Ladies Night Out," which was held in October offered a new twist...a car raffle. This event was successfully chaired by Pam Linsky and Barbara Napolitano, with Jeannie O'Malley, board liaison. The event was attended by over 400 women in our community. Our most recent event was our annual "Walk/Run for a Cure" which has become a great community event. This was chaired by board member Pat Moroney and Mollye Fahey. Our Junior Coalition, chaired by Karen Cox, board liaison (grades 9-12) continues to host fundraising events and to provide support to the Coalition by supporting the library lecture series, the LI2 Day Walk, the walk/run and outreach.
The record success that we have enjoyed in 2008, will provide research grants to Weill Cornell Medical Center, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Montefiore Medical Center and North Shore-LIJ Hospital. The Junior Coalition funded grants to Cold Spring Harbor Lab and Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline. All grants were determined by our research committee chaired by board member Debra Arenare.
Our successes are due to the talents of the committed women in our Manhasset community. The perseverance of these individuals to raise money and awareness of breast cancer is noteworthy. We continue to try to be a part of the solution. Thank you to all in our community, neighboring communities and our local merchants, especially Gallery Couture, for your continued support of our organization.
