Carol Waldorf Lohr
Carol Waldorf Lohr, 71, passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of Aug. 19, 2008, due to acute complications from metastatic cancer. Jerry Lohr, Carol's husband of nearly 49 years, was with her at their home in Saratoga, CA. Carol Wilhelmina Waldorf was the only daughter and eldest of five children born to Helmuth Waldorf and Miriam Tracy Waldorf, who resided in East Hampton, prior to their deaths. Always ladylike yet with an inquisitive mind, Carol reflected the acumen and drive of parents whose values centered on family, education, hard work and excellence. Helmuth Waldorf, a tool and die maker's apprentice who created and then sold one of America's leading instrument testing companies, emigrated from Westphalia, Germany, at age 19 to study at Columbia University. There, he met and later married Miriam Tracy, a teacher of history at a time when women with advanced credentials were few. Carol spent her youth absorbed in history, science, and her German and English heritage. She delighted in her younger brothers, cousins, and paternal grandmother Ummy, and enjoyed summer trips to upstate New York and the Hamptons. A graduate of Manhasset High School Class of '54, Carol's love of language landed her at Middlebury College in Vermont, where she excelled in French and biology. After graduation in 1958, Carol traveled west to Stanford University, where she pursued her masters in French, dabbled in Russian, and met her husband, Jerome Julian (Jerry) Lohr. Carol's beauty, charm and lilting laugh quickly caught the eye of the serious engineering student, and in 1959, they married and settled in Menlo Park. A South Dakota native and also the eldest of five children, Jerry pursued his masters and then Ph.D. in civil engineering at Stanford, later serving in the Air Force as a research scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. In 1961, first son Steven Waldorf Lohr was born, and in 1964, a daughter, Cynthia Caroline Lohr and Jerry's first building and development business, Saratoga Foothills Development Corp. In the summer of 1969, Lawrence Tracy Lohr was born. Carol was the nexus around which the family evolved while Jerry built two additional, successful enterprises--J. Lohr Properties and J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines. Carol was laid to rest in Saratoga on Sept. 12, 2008 in a private gathering of close friends and family, notably, on the day that would have marked Jerry and Carol's 49th wedding anniversary. Carol is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Berthold Waldorf, and remains forever loved by husband Jerry, sons Steve and Lawrence and their respective partners Sylvia Michiels and fiancée Emily Baker, and daughter Cynthia and husband Sam Lucente, and their daughters, Emily and Annabella. To further honor her memory, family and friends have established a permanent scholarship fund at her alma mater, Middlebury College. The Carol Waldorf Lohr '58 Scholarship Fund will be awarded each year in perpetuity to a student with demonstrated financial need. Checks may be sent to Meghan Foley '77, College Advancement, Munford House, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT, 05753, or contributions may be made online at middlebury.edu/supporting. Gladys G. Hoart, a longtime resident of Manhasset, died on Oct. 1, 2008 in her home. She was 94. Mrs. Hoart was born in Brooklyn in 1914 and spent her life in or near her beloved New York City. Until she became ill, she was an adjunct professor of English at Nassau Community College and on the board of the Musician's Club of New York. She became a member of the New York Stock Exchange in 1981 and remained one until the New York Stock Exchange went public in 2006. When she lived in Flushing, Queens in the 1950s and early '60s, she founded the Broadway Flushing Homeowners' Association, a group still keeping Broadway Flushing vital and beautiful more than 50 years later. She held a bachelor's and master's degree from New York University in English Literature and a second master's degree from the New School for Social Research. She is survived by her son Robert Hoart and daughter-in-law Joan Hoart of Bridgeport, CT and her daughter Helen Hoart and son-in-law Bailey Sterrett III of Wilton, CT and her five grandchildren, Brendan Hoart, Patrick Hoart, Bailey Sterrett IV, Martin Sterrett and Eileen Sterrett. Allen Harris Wofford, 70, of Plandome, died on Sept. 4, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital, Roslyn. He was proud to have paid all of his college and graduate school expenses including his membership in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity from his own earnings. After graduation from MIT in 1961, he served as a second lieutenant in the US Army at Fort Lee, VA for 18 months prior to returning to his job in the Treasurer's Department at Exxon Corporation. He worked for Exxon for the following 25 years. He and his family were transferred to Exxon subsidiaries in Coral Gables, FL and Bogota, Colombia before returning to work in New York. Upon his retirement from Exxon, he started his own tax and accounting business, which he ran from his house until shortly prior to his death. Allen Wofford was also very active in community affairs and volunteer activities, working with the Boy Scouts, the Kiwanis Club of Manhasset, the Plandome Fire Department and numerous other charitable groups. He also served in various capacities for social clubs including the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club and the Plandome Field and Marine Club. He and Alice enjoyed their membership at York Country Club in York, ME. A memorial service was held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Port Washington on Sept. 20. Contributions in Allen's name may be sent to the Plandome Fire Department, 65 South Drive, Plandome, NY 11030 or the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center, P.O. Box 543, Manhasset, NY 11030. Claude P. Mapes, 73, died on October 2, 2008 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He is survived by his wife Yoshiko, son Kenji, and sister Jessy Trudeau. He was also father of the late Perry Mapes. A man of great warmth and good humor, Claude Mapes was a proud Air Force major, talented banker, and avid sailor. He was also a tireless and committed community volunteer. His many past contributions include trustee, Buckley Country Day School; president, Shorehaven Association; committee chair, Council of Greater Manhasset Civic Association; and treasurer, Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church, 1355 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Christ Church would be appreciated.
