(Editors Note: This letter was sent to the Coalition for a Safer Manhasset and to the Manhasset Press for publication.)
Your pictures in the Manhasset Press have often shown trucks double-parked on Plandome Road and you have stressed that this is illegal. (Latest truck picture is in the Manhasset Press dated July 31).
I have enquired of a number of double-parked truckers as to whether they have ever been ticketed and was told, never. Some appeared incredulous. If the police began ticketing us how would these stores survive, they asked. Of course, they are right.
The Coalition has requested the public to submit possible solutions. In this case the options are severely limited. You indicate that you are working closely with the Police Department. What do they suggest? Should the Coalition request that the 6th Precinct Police vigorously enforce the no double parking law? I don't think you want to push that too hard, do you?
We are a nation of laws and therefore the police and government should not be allowed to selectively decide which laws they will enforce and which they will not. In this case it seems that the only laws such as U-turn are enforced. Whereas the ones that would impinge on business or government such as double-parked trucks are not enforced. In this case even though, as you point out, it causes dangerous situations.

PS: My letter to you concerning how to better inform the public about U-Turn laws dated July 4 along with a second request for a reply dated July 26 has remained unanswered. The July 4 letter was reprinted in the Manhasset Press of July 17.
