Four alumni will be inducted into the Towson University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 10 at the annual Hall of Fame dinner:
Former gymnastics standout Wendy Chalmers, '95, Manhasset's All-American midfielder Tim Langton, '96 of the lacrosse team; Academic All-America baseball player James Vallillo, '96; and All-Conference soccer defender Erik Washington, '96.
A three-year starter at midfield for the Tiger men's lacrosse team, Tim Langton became only the second player in school history to earn first team NCAA Division I All-American honors. He was a first team All-American pick in 1996 when he captained the Tigers to a 9-5 record and a berth in the NCAA quarterfinals. After a 16-11 win over Loyola College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers lost to Princeton in a game played at Rutgers.
In his senior season, Langton was the Tigers' fourth-leading scorer with 27 goals and three assists. He also had two of the Tigers' biggest goals of the season. In late March, he scored the game-winning goal in overtime, leading Towson to a 12-11 win over Loyola. In May, his goal with 2:34 left turned out to be the game-winning goal in the Tigers' 13-12 victory over Johns Hopkins University. A first team all-league selection in America East, he finished his college career with 58 goals and 16 assists. He also had 95 ground balls in his career. During his four-year career, the Port Washington, N.Y. native helped the Tigers post a 28-20 record with two NCAA Tournament appearances.
After earning his degree in economics from Towson, Langton was the No. 1 draft pick in the National Lacrosse League. He played for the New York Saints for four years. Currently an institutional securities broker, he resides in Plandome, NY with his wife, Liz, and their three young children.
The Towson University Athletic Hall of Fame was conceived in 1963 and developed by Dr. Donald "Doc" Minnegan and alumnus George Henderson to provide recognition for outstanding alumni athletes who excelled in sports while at Towson and are successful in their life. It was also their purpose to cite those members of the athletic and sports staff at Towson who had materially and significantly contributed to the total development of successful alumni athletes. In 1974, the Athletic Hall of Fame was incorporated into the Alumni Association Awards program.
To be nominated, an individual must be a Towson alumna/us or an athletics staff member for at least 10 years. For selection, an alumna/us must have made a significant contribution to the college community through excellence in athletics, achieved marked success in life after leaving Towson, and be an active supporting member of the community. An athletics staff member must have clearly demonstrated athletic proficiency, and a high personal regard and respect for alumni and students.
This year's dinner will be held on campus in the Susquehanna Room of the University Union. The cocktail hour will start at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. For ticket information, call (410) 704-3903.
