Robert P. Daly, Sr. who was born on April 27, 1921 passed away peacefully on April 19, 2008 after a long struggle with lung cancer. He was a longtime resident of Munsey Park, Manhasset.
Predeceased in 1996 by his beloved wife of 42 years, Evelyn (née Huisking) he is survived by his son Robert and daughter-in-law Frances Murray Daly of South Norwalk, CT, by his daughter Margaret (Peggy) McCrary of Tallahassee, FL; also by his six cherished grandchildren: Laura, and triplets Ava, Ilsa and Ingrid McCrary, and by twins Robert and Peter Daly. He was also predeceased by his son-in-law, John McCrary.
The only child of N.Y. Supreme Court Justice Peter M. and Marion (Crawford) Daly, he was raised in Astoria, NY and Huntington, L.I., attended Xavier High School in NYC, and graduated from Georgetown College. After war service he received an LLB degree from Georgetown's Law School, later serving as national vice president for the university's law alumni association.
A proud World War II veteran, he served as communications officer, grade of lieutenant, aboard aircraft carrier USS WASP in the Pacific theater; awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Citation and authorized to wear eight battle stars on the Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal and two battle stars on the Philippine Liberation medal. For the remainder of his life he faithfully attended his ship's reunions all over the U.S.
Admitted to the bars of New York and the District of Columbia, he maintained a law practice in L.I. City for many years, and was honored in 2000 by the Queens County Bar Assn. on the 50th anniversary of his admission. He held office as president of the St. Patrick's Society of Queens and of the L.I. City Lawyers Club, also served on the Emerald Society of the Archdiocese of NY.
For many years until his death he was vice president and a director of the charitable Huisking Foundation, and also served many years on the board of directors of Glyco Corp.
Robert Daly was a member of the North Hempstead Country Club; a life member, Huntington Yacht Club, where he served many years as Flag Secretary and as Legal Officer, and where he maintained his boats until his wife's illness.
He was an award-winning amateur photographer, talented artist, author of several magazine articles, and his eclectic interests included woodworking, electronics and shortwave radio, cryptography, history, travel, model railroading, yachting and astronomy. He chose not to pursue a promising early career in politics because he wished to spend a private life with his family. Outgoing and friendly, he could converse with and show genuine respect and interest in people from every walk of life. He will be greatly missed.
Visiting at Fairchild Sons Inc. of Manhasset, Sunday, April 27, 2008 and Monday, April 28, 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass Tuesday, April 29, 2008, 11 a.m. St. Mary's Church, Manhasset, where he was a parishioner for over 40 years. Private interment for family and close friends at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Huntington, L.I.
Nancy H. Becker of Manhasset died on April 15, 2008. She was the beloved wife of George E. Becker and the loving mother of Ruth B. (Robert) Lubbers and Susan B. (John) Alagna.
Nancy Becker was the cherished grandmother of Olivia Grace and sister of James A. Horne.
Arrangements were made by Fairchild Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, Thursday, April 17. A religious service was held Friday, April 18 at the Congregational Church in Manhasset. Interment was at Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port Washington.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Red Cross.
