An Iraq veteran, Luis Duran, is the inaugural recipient of the Semper Fi Scholarship at C.W. Post., endowed by Martin Kramer of Manhasset for Marine Corps veterans who have served in Afghanistan or Iraq. Roadwork on the Roslyn viaduct begins causing ongoing lane closures. The Manhasset Candlelight Memorial Service is held once again on Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Mary Jane Davies Park on Plandome Road. In its sixth year commemorating the tragedy in lower Manhattan, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania the overwhelming sorrow of that first candlelight service has not dimmed but grown and this year embraces hope for peace, the military, country, world, all those suffering from the war, security, and this year, especially, the workers at Ground Zero. Arrests are made in connection with swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti spray-painted on the Reconstructionist Synagogue located on Plandome Road, graffiti at Munsey Park School and at a residence in Roslyn Heights. The Manhasset Booster Club and supporters make the new Manhasset High School Fitness Center a reality. The Manhasset School Community Association (SCA) 2007 Summer Study grants go to five recipients. For 38 years the SCA has provided help to juniors to expand their horizons during the summer between their junior and senior years. Community gardeners dispute with the Science Museum is partially resolved. The gardeners' cannot pass on their plots to their family members, and no new members will be allowed to join this garden community of 28 years. A new notification system is in place to contact residents in an emergency-within minutes the county said it can reach homes and businesses and can target a very specific area. A $2 million memorial to September 11, 2001 - the largest in the nation to date - is unveiled at Eisenhower Park to honor the 344 Nassau County residents who lost their lives. Four years ago, President George Bush - along with then-Governor George Pataki and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani - helped break ground for the memorial, which features a wall with the names of the 344 Nassau residents who died in the World Trade Center and on Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, PA. Manhasset was hit particularly hard, losing 17 neighbors. Residents now have online access to their real property tax bills and can make payments online. The Manhasset Tower Foundation donated the following gifts to the district's schools: Graphic Design/Digital Media Apple computer software, equipment, and chairs for use by the secondary school graphics lab; Apple computer hardware, software and chairs for the secondary school Music MIDI lab; and a "computer on wheels" and science probeware to be used by the science program. The combined value of these educational gifts totals more than $222,000. The Manhasset Arts and Cultural Center launches their pilot program. Chamber of Commerce is informed by 6th Precinct Police that the best way to prevent a burglary is to get to know your neighbor. Manhasset High School senior Kadeem Howell, at the New York State Track Championships, was third in the state meet (triple jump) and won All-State Honors.

A thief is nabbed on Plandome Road after an attempted robbery of a pair of sunglasses. Plandome's Fire Chief Ned Peyser, 48, is critically injured in a fall off a ladder while cleaning a roof gutter on his home, and passed away without regaining consciousness. To honor Chief Peyser the village trustees granted permission to hold his wake in the Plandome Village Hall, an exception rarely granted and which has not occurred in recent history. As it turned out the space was needed to accommodate the hundreds of mourners paying their respects. The North Shore-LIJ Health System toasted its first decade as a merged system at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, where 1,300 guests gathered for a star-studded ball that raised $30 million to support capital projects.

A community wide garage sale is sponsored by the Manhasset Community Fund with over 40 homes participating. It resembles a town-wide open house. Youth programs are featured at Legion Post 304 meeting.

The Kiwanis Club of Manhasset, now known as the Kiwanis Club of Manhasset - Port Washington, holds their annual Pancake Breakfast, an event now in its 40th year. A Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) is formed in Manhasset. HGTV selects EOC building as one of 10 throughout the country for a renovation project. The school district's Citizens Advisory Committee for Finance re-evaluates its role. This administration is stable, they said, while the years before Superintendent Charlie Cardillo and his new cabinet were hired were tumultuous years-busy years when the CAC performed many functions that should have been undertaken by the business office. Criminal charges filed against four current or former Town of North Hempstead employees as the result of a 16-month probe into allegations of corruption within the town's building department. The grand jury indictment of two employees, along with the criminal complaints filed against two others, outline charges of grand larceny, official misconduct, accepting of unlawful gratuities and bribe receiving. Those charged include the former building commissioner David Wasserman, former deputy commissioner John Madden, former plans examiner Andrew Acierno and building inspector Thomas McDonough. Indicted in August was former plumbing inspector Joseph Lomonaco. As the Manhasset School's building program enters the fall, the district reports that all capital fund projects, and most of the Phase I Bond projects, have been completed on time or are continuing on or ahead of schedule. With the predominance of work done during the summer months, district wide construction is now focused at the Manhasset Secondary School, where a new roof is being installed. Due to the growing interest and enthusiasm in tennis, the high school had a girls JV team for the first time ever. Manhasset Secondary School receives a call from an unidentified male who stated the following: "A lot of kids are going to get hurt ...check their school bags." Police were contacted immediately, eventually the area was cleared as being safe and the incident is now classified as an "unusual, suspicious incident" for the high school and is being investigated by the 6th Squad. Immaculate Heart of Mary League hosts the 49th Annual Silver Tea Luncheon-the longest standing tradition of Our Lady of Grace Montessori School. Church of St. Mary CYO girls travel program kicks off with 13 teams and over 150 girls participating. Coalition for a Safer Manhasset (CSM) holds Manhasset's 3rd Annual "Safety Day," a community event at the Mary Jane Davies Park.

Daylight saving time causes confusion. The move from daylight saving time to standard time doesn't happen this year until the first Sunday in November, instead of the usual last Sunday in October-changed to conserve energy. Manhasset's June and Joe Viverito host their annual New York City Marathon Party on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Westside Brewing Company in Manhattan. The first of these parties was held in Central Park's Sheep Meadow in 1974. Viverito has completed 100-plus marathons and 33 post-marathon parties. The Tower Foundation of Manhasset announces its 2007/08 initiative. This coming fiscal year Tower will devote its entire fundraising efforts to providing and installing Interactive Whiteboards in the secondary school and both elementary schools. Interactive Whiteboards, sometimes referred to as SMARTboards, use specialized computer software to project images from a computer screen onto a large, touch sensitive whiteboard. The computer is manipulated via the whiteboard using a finger, a pen or other specialized devices. This type of technology has now become the recognized standard in a majority of public and private schools throughout the country. Nassau Legislature votes to disperse mortgage tax revenues to the county's 64 incorporated villages. District launches a computerized "Point of Sale" lunch program. Two fourth grade classes at St. Mary's Elementary School developed a pen pal relationship with a Peace Corps volunteer, Manhasset resident Michael Breslin, stationed in Guatemala since he graduated from Villanova University, enabling students to broaden their view of the world and learn about the different lifestyles and needs of the people. The individual making the threat at Manhasset High School has been identified and arrested. Class of 2008 wins float competition in memorable Homecoming 2007 by using popular literary character Harry Potter as their inspiration. They came up with the slogan "Voldemort met his Fate by the Wands of 2008." November election winners, all Democrats: North Hempstead Town Supervisor, Jon Kaiman; Town Clerk, Leslie Gross; Town Reciever of Taxes, Rocco Iannarelli; Nassau County Legislator 10th District, Judi Bosworth; Nassau County Legislator 11th District, Wayne Wink; and Town Council, 4th District, Maria-Christina Poons. MHS girls team competes in the Nassau County Division C Swim Championship at Eisenhower Aquatic Center, and swim to Division Title. Residents of Flower Hill, along with dignitaries and guests gather at the Flower Hill Village Hall to dedicate the Flower Hill Park and to bury a time capsule commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the village. The capsule contains: drawings by children of the area; the Flower Hill anthem; copies of local newspapers; videos of all this year's celebrations and other memorabilia. A DVD player will be added to ensure that in the year 2107 the information contained in the capsule can be accessed. That's planning ahead!

The Manhasset Middle School Girls Tennis team, consisting of 24 seventh- and eighth graders, ended their season with a 7-1 record, only losing their last match in a close run against Jericho. St. Mary's Elementary School seventh and eighth grade boys soccer team finished its season with an unprecedented record of 10-1. Karen Ferby-Guy, Manhasset educator for nearly 30 years, director of elementary and secondary dance programs, and longtime volunteer on behalf of the young people of the Manhasset community, was presented with the annual "Maggie Award" for her contributions and innumerable hours of service to the children of Manhasset. Planet Manhasset is voted in as an SCA committee for 2007-2008 year. The new SCA eco-committee is dedicated to researching and implementing ways to adopt a greener living philosophy in schools, homes and community.

Temple Judea of Manhasset hosts an Israeli Bond Breakfast, honoring Lauren and Rabbi Todd Chizner and featuring speaker Dr. Yossi Olmert, noted Israel expert and brother of Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The highly successful breakfast raised over $300,000 in Israel Bonds and over 120 people came to listen to the political insights of Dr. Olmert and honor the temple's religious and spiritual leader. The EOC building on High Street won a makeover from cable's HGTV along with nine other locations. Five of the 10 sites selected receive additional funding and the winner is the one who gets the most votes. So residents are encouraged to vote-once a day! The 13th Annual Holiday Show for Manhasset's Kids held once again at the Clearview Theater on Plandome Road. The Bayview Civic Association sponsors the show along with U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management and State Farm Insurance, Nancy Morris Agency. Mark Sauvigne seeks third term as Manhasset Park District Commissioner and is running unopposed in the election. In an audit of the North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman claims to have uncovered "fraud, theft and lack of oversight" at the nonprofit children's mental health agency that resulted in a loss of nearly $71,000.

The center's executive director and CEO Andrew Malekoff, however, said the fraud and theft were uncovered internally and not as a result of the comptroller's audit, adding the manner in which Weitzman presented the audit was "outrageous, misleading and, perhaps most all, could be damaging to the half-century-old social service agency. "We take the Nassau County comptroller's report very seriously," Malekoff said, "but the ... report was overblown, inaccurate and unfair to an organization with a spectacular 50-year record of service to children and families in Nassau County." League of Women Voters sponsors a forum on immigration-a current and controversial topic. The Manhasset High School Girls Varsity Field Hockey team had a great 2007 season led by Coach Steve Sproul and Assistant Coach Bridget Lynch. They finished with a record of 13 wins, 3 losses. The team made the playoffs for Nassau County Class B and advanced to the finals. They were ranked # 3 in the Newsday poll. Olivia Amato, Manhasset High School junior, was honored for field hockey with the All-State award. In order to receive this award the student athlete must also be selected for the All County award. Olivia was one of 10 athletes from Nassau County to receive this award. Manhasset High School Select Ensemble warms up at the Plandome Village Hall for their performance at the White House four days later. An agreement is in place for reduced helicopter noise. U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announces that a landmark agreement has been reached with the Eastern Region Helicopter Council, Inc., the trade group representing Long Island's helicopter industry, and East Hampton and Gabreski Airports, to reduce helicopter noise over communities in Nassau and Suffolk, divert choppers away from populated areas, and encourage compliance with preferred noise abatement routes. The Manhasset Varsity Football Team celebrates a great 2007 season. The team was Conference "Big Four" Champions, and made it to the Section VIII semi-finals played at Hofstra. Seven of the players were recognized by the Nassau County Coaches Association for their exemplary performance. All-County honors went to Jeff Molinari, John Duvnjak, and Jeff Izzo, with Honorable Mention going to Brendan Denihan. Tristan Miller, Vinnie Rizzo and J.P. Rinfret. Each was awarded All-Conference distinction.
