St. Mary's seventh grade CYO girls basketball team coached by Mike Lynch and John SanSeverino, concluded its season with an impressive 31-22 victory over St. Francis of Wantagh. Leading the offensive charge was Katie Giesecke, Daniella Hernandez and Toni SanSeverino. The agressive defensive stance was the key to this victory with Elvie Gassman, Ana Capetola, Sarah Lynch, Mary Welsh and Daniella Hernandez causing 15 turnovers. Kelsey Quakenbush, Rebecca Hernandez and Katie Giesecke took control of the rebounding at both ends which did not allow St. Francis many scoring opportunities. This week's win, coupled with back-to-back overtime victories over St. Anne's, Garden City, and St. Peter's, Port Washington, were the highlights of a very successful season in which the girls improved with each game and played as a team. On a side note Kayla Feeney's dedicated play was sorely missed after she was injured mid-season with a collarbone fracture.
