Obituaries

Word has been received of the death of Ann Prewein, formerly of Manhasset, in Falmouth Massachusetts. She was born in New York on Jan. 14, 1912 and died at the age of 95 on March 12, 2007, two weeks after suffering several strokes. The daughter of Rudolph and Catherine Babinetz, she grew up in Southington, Connecticut and attended Laurelton Hall Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut. Ann met her husband to be, Karl Prewein, at a function in St. Mary's Church, while visiting relatives in Manhasset. After their marriage, they resided in Manhasset where Ann was active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, Company #1, the Great Neck Does Association, and was an election poll worker. An accomplished seamstress, knitter and quilter, she worked for many years for the Singer Sewing Company as demonstrator and bookkeeper, and taught at night school. After retirement, she and Karl traveled frequently in North America. They moved to Falmouth Massachusetts in 1991 to be nearer one of their daughters.

Ann was predeceased by her husband, Karl Prewein, and her sisters Helen and Mary and brothers Frank and Rudolph. She leaves three daughters: Carol Butler of Owlshead Maine; Marcia Leonard (Robert) of Falmouth Massachusetts; and Pat Amico (Charles) of Thousand Oaks California. She treasured her grandchildren: Jim (Michelle) and Gretchen Butler (Hardy), Gregory (Liz), Jeffrey, Timothy (Carrie), and Matthew (Kelly Beth) Leonard, and Christian (Aaran) and Stephanie Amico, and her great grandchildren: Hope and Daniel Butler; Timothy, Jack, Joshua, Lauren, Sarah, Moriah and Catherine Leonard; and Tyler Amico. Ann is also survived by her sisters Helen of Connecticut and Rose of Ohio and Florida, and her sister-in-law Ann of Massachusetts, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Robert J. Mallgren
Robert J. Mallgren, 76, passed away on Nov. 25, 2007. He was born on Jan. 22, 1931. He was known to all as "Big Bob" and was a true Manhassetite, having lived in Manhasset for his entire life. He attended Plandome Road Elementary School and Manhasset Junior/Senior High School. An avid sports fan, Mallgren supported all Manhasset and PAL sporting events, and never missed a Fritz Mueller Tournament. Mallgren was known as the "Number One Fan," he even traveled to many away games with the teams. "Big Bob" will be missed dearly by his friends and family.

Ernest John Garcia died at his home in Greenwood on Dec. 27, 2007 of natural causes. He was 95 years old.

Born in New York City on June 9, 1912, he was the son of Joseph Carmen Garcia and Amelia Hernandez Garcia and the great-great-grandson of Francisco de Santander, the president of New Granada, the South American territory that would become Columbia.

Mr. Garcia made his career with the New Jersey Port Authority as an expert in loading and unloading intercontinental shipments. During World War II he was instrumental in shipping US Government military equipment overseas for use in Europe. He was a longtime member of the International Longshoremen's Association. He was also an avid builder and collector of model trains.

Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maria Cardillo Garcia, his sister, Gloria Garcia Guzman of Bogotá, Columbia; his four children, Lea Garcia McCallum of Greenwood, SC, Josephine Garcia Royle of Vermont, Ernest Mathew Garcia of Connecticut, William John Garcia, MD of Virginia and many adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at noon, Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
