Four school board candidates running for two open positions appear Meet the 'Candidates Night' sponsored by the League of Women voters. Many questions were directed specifically to Martin Dekom and Jack Vivinetto, who are challenging incumbents, Larry Belinsky and Aline Khatchadourian, but questions were to be general and answered by each candidate. Police guard the crime scene after a brazen, midday robbery at Lord Jewelers on Plandome Road. The jewelry store had recently moved from its location on Northern Boulevard, also in Manhasset. Park district provides update on planned construction of new office/garage. Their present building, erected in the early 1900s, was determined to not have any historical significance. The new building would be approximately 4,000 square feet and would include office space and a garage. The district then withdrew the request for further review. Manhasset High School lacrosse breaks into the Top 20 in the country. Town board made temporary, interim appointments of Maria-Christina Poons and Leslie Gross as town councilmember and town clerk respectively. Both positions will be filled in the upcoming November election. The two interim appointments fill vacancies created by the departures of Wayne Wink and Michelle Schimel, both victorious in recent special elections. Manhasset-Lakeville Fire and Water District responds to state audit. Virginia Tech killings prompt security discussions at school board meeting. Manhasset High School/Middle School receives a telephoned bomb threat, schools are evacuated for one and a half hours, and police find no bomb. School bomb threats are a felony, and related legislation allows for up to $10,000 in restitution to be paid by any individual convicted of reporting a false incident or bomb, and up to $5,000 to be paid by the parents of a child who makes a false report. Dr. Dean Schlanger appointed Principal of Manhasset Middle/High School. Manhasset School District election results returned the incumbents to the board and the budget passed 2,009 to 1,577. The challengers for board of education positions campaigned on a platform of lower school budget increases and received 3,070 total votes to the incumbents' total of 4,004 votes.
Comptroller Howard S. Weitzman's independent Audit Advisory Committee's third annual report reviewed Nassau's financial position and budget, the status of tax certiorari payments, and the financial condition of the Nassau Health Care Corporation. The seven-member audit committee includes two members, Robert Wild and Aline Khatchadourian, from Manhasset. The MHS Golf team, with a 9 -1 record, wins its conference on the last day of play with an 8 - 1 win over Syosset. Under the leadership of coach Chuck Collyer, Manhasset will be entering the Nassau County High School Tournament at Bethpage State Park for the 13th year in a row. Public hearing held regarding the proposed cable television franchise agreements between each of the incorporated villages-- Flower Hill, Great Neck, Great Neck Estates, Great Neck Plaza, Kensington, Kings Point, Lake Success, Munsey Park, North Hills, Plandome, Plandome Heights, Plandome Manor, Russell Gardens, Saddle Rock and Thomaston-- and Verizon. The Village of Flower Hill celebrates its 75th anniversary with a festive gala at the North Hempstead Country Club in Port Washington. The event featured Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and historian, Robert Caro, best known for his biography of Robert Moses, The Power Broker. Nassau County Department of Public Works makes upgrades to the pedestrian signals on Plandome Road. Manhasset High School's Junior Varsity Tennis Team completes a successful season with a 12-2 record earning a second place finish. Manhasset Varsity Baseball wins in county playoffs. Red, White and Blue Patriotic Day celebrated at Munsey Park Elementary School. The Army Rangers who served in Iraq with Manhasset's fallen hero, Sgt. James Regan, carried an American flag into battle there. In honor of Regan's sacrifice and in appreciation to the students of Munsey Park Elementary School for their support and the many care packages sent to the Rangers, they sent the students the flag. Jimmy Regan was a student at Munsey Park Elementary School. For the first time, Manhasset Varsity Softball team wins a Conference VI Title Championship. The Memorial Day Parade, sponsored again by American Legion Post 304, honors veterans from all wars -- Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean, Vietnam and now, Iraq. This year the parade makes special mention of Sgt. James J. Regan, who died in February in Iraq and whose family was in attendance for the unveiling of the James J. Regan Plaque added to the Gold Star Memorial. Jimmy Regan played lacrosse for Duke University and the Manhasset Boys Lacrosse League, the league marched in the parade as a tribute to Jim Regan, wore Duke University Lacrosse jerseys with "Regan" and "10," Jimmy's number when he played for Duke. Daniel Barnes, a pitcher/first baseman for Manhasset High School, has been named to the Nassau County roster for the third annual HIP Grand Slam Challenge high school baseball All-Star game. Barnes, a four-year varsity player, is also All-County and League MVP.
Manhasset Chamber of Commerce holds its annual outdoor picnic and Councilman Fred Pollack is asked to provide updates on the Plandome Road visioning process and on problems at the building department. Mary Minturn, an 80-year resident of Manhasset, dies on June 8. Mary Minturn was born in Brooklyn in 1923. Her family moved to Manhasset in 1927 where they settled on Colonial Parkway, still the family home. Minturn wrote a column for the Manhasset Press entitled "The Way It Was," concerning her memories of growing up in Manhasset. A county park, Flower Hill Park, is transferred to the Village of Flower Hill. In their ongoing meetings civic associations pool information and find common footing on helicopter noise, safety concerns, parking at the high school, cable and road repairs. North Strathmore loves the TV series The Sopranos so on June 10, fans gather at a local home for the well-touted season finale, capping a successful eight-year run. The cat shelter on the Nassau County property leased by the Science Museum of Long Island is vandalized. Time-honored tradition continues as the parents of the class of 2007 invite the town to view 2007 Senior Frolic decorations. In its 87th graduation ceremony, Manhasset High School says good-bye to its class of 2007. Salutatorian Jeremy Kreitman's speech stressed changing times and Valedictorian Anthony Dedousis believes that true friendships will endure forever. He also told his peers to "confront uncertainty, because it is uncertainty that defines the future."
Lawrence W. Mulvey, 56, with 28 years of experience in the Nassau County Police Department, is named the new Nassau County police commissioner. Mulvey replaces James H. Lawrence who retired on July 1 after holding the position since June 2002. Susan Auriemma of Manhasset is actively involved in increasing awareness of child safety around cars and support is growing for a law to prevent 'back-over' accidents. Town Hall, 220 Plandome Road, will be undergoing renovations for the next three months. Town Hall was placed on the New York State's Landmark Registry earlier this year. Manhasset artist Richard Belley debuts his latest major work. At St. Mary's High School Graduation 2007, Rachel Marino of Manhasset is Valedictorian. LaCoquille Restaurant changes hands: from Pasquale Venezino who owned the restaurant for 25 years, since 1982, and is also the general manager of the Port Washington Yacht Club, to Michael Miller, Manhasset resident. A team of researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston has identified a mutation in a gene that results in Goltz syndrome and Manhasset's 6-year-old Jade Olsen and her family helped them do it. There are 150 disorders under the umbrella of Ectodermal Displaysia, and Goltz is one. The summer concerts held at the Mary Jane Davies Green on Plandome Road beginning each Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. begin in late July offering blue grass, country, swing and popular music. According to police, Marcus Randle, 24, of Manhasset, was shot multiple times and found in the parking lot of 55 Pond Hill Road. The victim is a graduate of Manhasset High School. Roadwork begins in Munsey Park. Manhasset High School students Connor English and Paul Pate selected to play for the Long Island lacrosse team in the Empire State Games this summer. They and 18 other players were selected from over 600 high school players who tried out from all parts of Long Island. The fire department responds to calls from motorists stranded in the rising waters on Northern Boulevard at Manhasset Woods Road. Flooding caused train service to be suspended, numerous closings on the LIE, Northern State, Wantagh, Meadowbrook Parkway and power outages. Commanding Officer Jay Caputo of the 6th Precinct Police has been reassigned to headquarters as the Executive Officer of the Detective Division. The new Commanding Officer of the 6th Precinct is Inspector Steven Williams.
The Manhasset Public Schools bond and capital fund projects are preceding on time, reported Greyhawk North America LLC, the district's construction manager. Work began at Munsey Park and Shelter Rock schools during the week of June 25, immediately following the close of the school year. Work at the secondary school complex began the week of July 9. The capital fund projects totaling $3,705,000 were approved by voters on May 16, 2006, and Bond Projects totaling $19,059,810 were approved by voters on Feb. 7, 2007. North Hempstead's pilot program online auction of surplus vehicles and equipment netted more than $90,000. Normally, surplus vehicles and equipment are disposed of at a live auction. The Manhasset Board of Education members and the administration have been attending meetings with County Executive Tom Suozzi in an effort to reduce burdensome school taxes. Consolidation of school districts was said to be a nonstarter but it was noted that wheels are turning in the direction of shared functions by school districts, perhaps health benefits and investments. Suozzi, they said, indicated savings could be realized in several areas, mentioning security, transportation, and payroll. Madeline Meryash read a prepared statement to the board regarding a selection on the summer reading list, Bad Girl, for 13- and 14-year-old students which she said was pornographic, and she read numerous graphic quotes to back up her statement. She asked by what process the book had been approved for the summer reading list. St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center, has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best hospitals in the nation. In addition to being honored for its leadership in cardiac care, the hospital was also ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for digestive disorders, geriatrics, and ear, nose and throat disorders. For over 60 years, Summer Center has been a fixture for Manhasset children and parents alike, and this year was hosted by Manhasset High School. Partnered with Scope Education Services, Summer Center provides an excellent program for all Manhasset residents entering kindergarten through sixth grade. The Manhasset 9/10 Girls Softball team reached the Long Island semifinals of the Williamsport Little League World Series Tournament. Suozzi calls for consolidation of election dates for special districts, calling the current setup a "crazy quilt." Members of the 6th Precinct Police, including a mounted unit, Problem Oriented Police Unit, bicycle patrol and Explorers, intermingled with strolling civilians at the Mary Jane Davies Park in Manhasset as they spread safety awareness during National Night Out Against Crime. Manhasset Public Schools capital fund projects are nearing completion in some areas, and bond projects are continuing with on-schedule progress in all areas. The Legislature approved a resolution to disperse more than $22.5 million from Nassau County mortgage tax revenue to the county's 64 incorporated villages. Flower Hill receives $48,000 and Plandome Manor $11,770 from Mortgage Tax Revenue for the Senior Meal Delivery Program. Local residents complain about helicopter noise. Representatives from the Manhasset Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA) joined forces with others to raise awareness about the dangerous trend of teens abusing cough medicine to get high. The Manhasset Booster Club helps make the new Manhasset High School Fitness Center a reality. The Booster Club is composed of parents of students and members of the community who are concerned with the promotion of properly supervised athletics in the public schools. In addition to supporting projects such as the fitness center, the Booster Club offers financial assistance for team trips and sponsors various team tournaments during the academic year.
