Match racing mania has hit Port Washington. First there was the Knickerbocker Cup Aug. 22-25, bringing international teams from around the world to our bay to vie for the very prestigious cup. Then just one week later, Knickerbocker YC hosted another match racing event. This time it was the Women's International Match Racing Association (WIMRA) Clinic over the Labor Day weekend. According to Jeanne Rosenthal, the local organizer for the event, "It was awesome! We had 18 participants and it was a great learning experience and a lot of fun to boot." By all accounts, this second in the series of match racing clinics taking place around the globe was a great success. Using a fleet of Colgate 26s donated by the Offshore Sailing School, plus two Ideal 18s from Manhasset Bay YC, the three day clinic turned 14 women and four men from sailors into keen match racers. The clinic was conducted by Liz Baylis, WIMRA Executive Director, and Dave Perry, US National Match Racing Champion. Local sailors included Paula Davis, Jeanne Rosenthal, and Cecelia Garner from Knickerbocker YC; Sue Miller, Stephanie Baas and Lois Scaglione from MBYC; and Lorraine McIntosh from PWYC. Other women came from Northport, Connecticut, New York City, New Jersey and Wisconsin. FULL STORY
