I write this letter in response to ongoing remarks by Judith Jacobs, presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature, on the issue of taxes. As reported in the Sunday New York Times Long Island section of Aug. 26, Ms. Jacobs responded to a proposal to reduce sale taxes on clothing by stating it was "totally irresponsible." I believe her response was the same to a proposal to freeze property taxes.
It seems if anyone is totally irresponsible it is politicians like Ms. Jacobs who seem in love with taxes and react with horror at any moves to reduce them. God forbid if anyone wants to cut off the gravy train to politicians who seem to revel in spending the public's hard-earned dollar on who knows what.
Nassau County's taxpayers are the most put upon people in the country and wouldn't it be nice if Ms. Jacobs and others of her kind concentrated on reducing government spending, putting Nassau County's fiscal house in order and be able to actually reduce taxes. Now wouldn't that be totally responsible?
