Susan MGregor Spann passed away suddenly in her sleep Aug. 17, 2007. She was born and raised in the established family of Warren and Jean McGregor in the community of Manhasset, Long Island and attended the Manhasset School system in which her father was principal of the high school. Susan enjoyed and excelled in her studies, as well as played in the high school band. She was multitalented and was well liked by her peers and teachers alike.
Susan Spann dedicated her life to the raising of her daughter, Kristin Michelle Spann and son, Michael Ryan Spann, as well as advocating for special needs children in the Nassau and Suffolk School systems. She is survived by her two children currently residing in Smithtown and her sister, Bonnie Stretz, residing in Nesconset, Long Island. Mrs. Spann worked diligently to provide her children an environment in which they could thrive in all aspects of their personal growth. Her daughter, Kristin, recently graduated from the College of Misericordia in Dallas, PA with a degree in Physical Therapy and her son, Michael, is presently attending St. Thomas College in Sparkill, N.Y.
Susan Spann graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1979 with an undergraduate degree in education and continued her desire to expand her knowledge in the education of children at Hofstra University by pursuing and obtaining her Masters with Distinction. She always believed her calling was to work with children who could not function in the mainstream educational system. She applied her education to address special needs children on Long Island both individually and in the classroom. Her unique gifts as an educator have benefited many students and have been appreciated by their parents over the past 25 years. In addition to working with special needs children, Susan assisted the Youth Minister at the Congregational Church of Manhasset by helping to develop and implement faith-based activities for nursery school children aged 4 and 5. She was known for her compassionate and tireless dedication to meeting the needs of others.
Susie McGregor utilized her interests in craftsmanship by designing clothing, jewelry and other crafts. Her family and friends were the beneficiary of her efforts on special birthdays and holidays. Furthermore, she enjoyed the accomplishment of home improvement projects and the care of her three dogs. The dogs always had unique ways of seeking her attention.
A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the Smithtown United Methodist Church and she was laid to rest at Smithtown Cemetery.

Lillian Bergendahl

Lillian Bergendahl passed away peacefully on Aug. 18, 2007 in Lenox, MA at the age of 96. She was born Lillian Gertrude Bettine on Nov. 14, 1910 in Amsterdam, NY, to Louis and Ida Bettine. She graduated from Amsterdam High School.
After working at the Homer Folks Hospital in Oneonta, NY for several years, Lillian became an office manager at General Electric, in Schenectady, NY. In 1943 she married Eigil Bergendahl, a ship chandler in New York. They moved to Manhasset in 1944. In 1949 they bought a house on Sherry Hill Lane where Lillian continued to live for 50 years.
Lillian enjoyed traveling, music, playing bridge, and reading The New York Times. She helped organize and run the Community Concert series in Manhasset, and was a regular volunteer for many years for the Salvation Army, in Mineola. After her husband's death in 1965, Lillian ran the ship chandlery for six years.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Williams and her husband Arthur, of Juno Beach, FL; granddaughter Heidi Guibord of Alameda, CA; grandson Garth Guibord of Portland, OR; stepdaughter Eleanor Hesse and her husband Donald of Eau Claire, WI; step-daughter-in-law Peggy Bergendahl of Fort Wayne, IN; six step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Eigil, her sister Evelyn, and her brother Herman.
A service of remembrance honoring the life of Lillian G. Bergendahl will be held at Kimball Farms Retirement Community, Lenox, MA, on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Long Island. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Bergendahl's memory may be made to the Salvation Army.
