Fun-loving, genuine friend, dedicated father, gentle, kind and loved by everyone ... these are a few words to describe Kurt Richard Jacobi, who, at 63, passed away May 5, 2007 at the Long Beach, CA Veterans Hospital after losing a six-month battle with multiple myeloma.
Kurt was born Feb. 1, 1944 in Mineola. He grew up in Manhasset, the son of the late Wolfgang Kurt and Alice Jacobi. He graduated from Manhasset High School in the Class of '62, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1966. He graduated from Cal State University-Domingues Hills. In 1974 he married Dorothy Rohr McLean, and settled in Long Beach, CA where they lived and raised their family.
Kurt was an avid sailor/racer and a member of the Cabrillo Beach and the Long Beach Yacht Clubs in California. Prior to his illness, Kurt and Dorothy fulfilled their dream of living aboard their boat and sailing abroad for four years.
Kurt is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter/son-in-law; granddaughter, Venisa, Robert and Emma Fritton; daughter, Lauren Anderson; and son, Justin Jacobi; two sisters, Vonnie and husband, Carter Haff and Jean McGurn, both of Glen Head; syster-in-law, Carol Rohr; brother-in-law/wife, Paul and Denise Rohr; mother-in-law, Nina Rohr; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life memorial was held at the Long Beach Yacht Club on May 22 with a burial at sea prior to the celebration. Participating in the remembrances of Kurt's life were childhood friends, Tom Mead, now of New York City; John Thompson, of Sands Point; and several of his Navy buddies, sailing/racing friends and family members.
He will be missed by many.
