Mary Minturn
Mary Minturn, an 80-year resident of Manhasset, died on June 8, 2007. She is survived by her sisters Agnes Parrott and Sister Elizabeth, by her brother, Rev. Joseph Minturn, and by nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, June 12, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Manhasset. Mary Minturn was born in Brooklyn in 1923. Her family moved to Manhasset in 1927 where they settled on Colonial Parkway, still the family home. Mary attended and graduated from St. Mary's Elementary School and Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica. She then attended secretarial school. She was employed by the Manhasset School District for 17 years, where she worked in the Continuing Education Office and was well known to the many Manhasset residents who signed up for Adult Education courses. Mary was the president of the Manhasset Senior Advisory Council for many years. It was during her term as president that the popular flu shot program was instituted. In her capacity as president of the Senior Advisory Council she published Sound Waves, a yearly bulletin of activities and general information of interest to senior citizens. Mary was also a past president of Manhasset's R.E.A.P. (Retired Executives and Professionals). Always a prolific writer, Mary had articles published in The Catholic Digest, Woman's World and The New York Times. The latter was written in favor of group homes for disabled adults. Readers of the Manhasset Press will recall with pleasure her column entitled "The Way It Was," concerning her memories of growing up in Manhasset, including those about Plandome Gardens, Where Did We Get Our Books Before the Library? and memories of her childhood friend who grew up to be the actor Tony Randall. Mary enjoyed travel and took a number of tours, among them trips to St. Petersburg, Russia; Italy, Greece and Ireland, as well as a train trip across Canada with her sister, Agnes. As a close friend said on hearing of her death, "She enjoyed life and appreciated it." She shared that enjoyment with her many friends in Manhassset and she will be greatly missed.
Richard Ward Foster
Richard Ward Foster (Dick) 92, died on Sunday May 13, 2007 of congestive heart failure, at home in Santa Barbara with three members of his family - daughter Judy, son Rick and daughter-in-law Terry, at his side. A patron and connoisseur of the visual arts, lover of fine wine, food, music and literature, a great reader, bridge player, international traveler and in earlier years a very good tennis player and golfer, Dick enjoyed life right up until its very end. He was a generous man, with a deep sense of integrity, witty, intelligent and knowledgeable, yet always modest. His wisdom, support and gentle temperament will be tremendously missed by his four children: Judy, Lynn, Rick and Andy, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Foster was born in Newark, NJ and grew up in nearby Morristown, the youngest of seven children. He met his first wife, Eileen, at a local theater group, had four children and in 1958 moved to California, living in Glendale and later Montecito. Eileen died in 1987; Dick married Kay Barnard and they divided their time between homes in Port Washington, where Kay had two children and four grandchildren, and Montecito, CA, until Kay died in 2005. Memorial services will be held later this summer. For anyone wishing to remember Dick with a gift, the family asks that contributions be sent in his name to Serenity House in Santa Barbara. Thomas Lamont, 98, formerly of Manhasset and Roslyn Heights, spanning the years from 1957 to 2002, died on May 23, 2007 of congestive heart failure in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was a resident at Springhouse, an assisted living facility. Reverend Lamont was born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland on October 24, 1908, the youngest of 11 children. At the age of 20 he was asked by the Presbyterian Church of Canada to come to Canada to study for the ministry. He earned his B.A. degree at McGill University and his B.D. degree at the Presbyterian Theological College, both in Montreal. Reverend Lamont was ordained in April 1939. He met his future wife, Ruth Burton, while studying at McGill University. They were married on June 13, 1942. Reverend Lamont's career in the ministry lasted over 60 years. After graduation from McGill, he had his first ministry at two churches in Montreal. In 1943, the Lamonts were called to the Old Bergen Reformed Church in Jersey City. In 1957, they were called to the Community Reformed Church in Manhasset, where Reverend Lamont served as Minister until his retirement in 1977. After a brief period when he worked as the residence life coordinator and chaplain of the Presbyterian Residence in Flushing, Queens, Reverend Lamont returned to the ministry. He was named a full-time interim minister at the Congregational Church of Manhasset, where he served for the next 24 years. In 2001 Reverend Lamont retired at the age of 92. After his first retirement in 1977, the Manhasset Kiwanis Club cited Reverend Lamont for a career "distinguished by an extraordinary felicity of language; a profound and eclectic scholarship, rich in literature, history, philosophy and religion; and a grace of wit and wisdom...his unique personal and ethnic origins produced a rare and excellent blend of character, intellect, charm and distinction, in brief, a very parfit Christian gentleman (to paraphrase Chaucer)..." Reverend Lamont is survived by his daughters, Maureen Cropper and Colleen Lamont, and four grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at the Congregational Church in Manhasset on September 29.
