The theme of the parade this year is, "Manhasset Remembers Sgt. James J. Regan and All Veterans Who Served Our Country." The parade is dedicated to our local hero Jimmy Regan who was killed in action in Iraq on Feb. 9 of this year. We also wish to remember our other deceased war veterans, especially the 20 Manhasset residents who passed away during the past year.
The Gold Star Memorial in Mary Jane Davies Park lists the names of all service members from Manhasset who were killed in action during all wars since the Civil War. The monument is being modified to include the name of Jimmy Regan from "Operation Iraq Freedom," the official name of the current conflict. The new monument will be unveiled before the parade on Memorial Day.
In connection with remembering Jimmy Regan, friends and family have announced the establishment of the "Lead The Way Fund." "Lead the Way" is the motto of the United States Army Rangers. In honor of Sgt. Regan the "Lead The Way Fund" has been established to provide assistance to Rangers and their families in time of need. It is a registered non-profit charity with IRS approval pending. Donations to the fund may be mailed to: Lead The Way Fund, Inc., P.O. box 281, Manhasset, NY 11030. For more information visit the website, LeadtheWayFund.org.
The Legion, assisted by Boy Scouts from Troop 97, will place American flags on the graves of veterans in local cemeteries and will participate with other Legion posts, again with the assistance of the Boy Scouts, to decorate veterans' graves at Pinelawn National Cemetery, in preparation for the Memorial Day ceremonies. Memorial wreaths will also be placed at the five memorial monuments in Manhasset.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 27, at the Congregational Church, 1845 Northern Blvd., Manhasset at 10 a.m. in honor of our war dead. All are urged to attend and join with the Legion in remembrance of the great sacrifice of these citizen soldiers.
