Anyes deHorst Eames
Anyes deHorst Rozendaal Eames, 74, of Auburn, ME died peacefully Jan. 28, 2007 at the Hospice House in Auburn as a result of acute leukemia.
She was born Agnès Rozendaal in Merignies, Lez-Lille, (Nord) France, on May 3, 1932, the daughter of Nanette (Isidor) of Paris and Julien Rozendaal of Lille, France. After a harrowing escape from France ahead of the Nazi invasion, her family eventually made it to American shores, settling in Forest Hills, achieving American citizenship on Feb. 26, 1946. Eames attended Great Neck North High School, then Smith College, graduating in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. On June 26, 1954, she married Earl Ward Eames, Jr., a native of Morris, MN, a WWII navy vet and MIT ‘49 chemical engineering graduate. Her husband’s career in management consulting meant residing in various locations including: Helsinki, Finland; Weston, MA; Manhasset; Ile-Ife, Nigeria; Monrovia, Liberia; Cairo, Egypt; Washington, DC and Minneapolis, MN.
Eames was a sensitive and insightful “people person” who devoted herself to raising her four children, while nevertheless maintaining an active role as a volunteer and helpmeet. When employed, she chose the helping professions of hospital social worker and helping special needs children. Since the late 1970s, Anyes Eames bravely faced a series of increasingly debilitating illnesses, of which sudden and profound bilateral deafness was the most challenging symptom. Her more recent near blindness was an added trial. Fortunately, Earl was devoted and helpful throughout their journey together. When abruptly widowed in 1998, Eames moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn, ME to reside near her daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Eames, associate professor at Bates College, and her grandson, Nimal Eames-Scott. She is survived by three of her four siblings: Stephen J. Rozendaal of Edinburgh, Scotland; John D. Rozendaal of Longboat Key, FL; and Brigitte Smith of Evanston, IL and Santa Fe, NM. She is survived by four children: Dr. Elizabeth Anne Eames of Lewiston, ME; (Earl) Ward Eames III of Golden Valley, MN; Erik Michael Eames of West Newbury, MA; and Christopher Paul Eames of Roswell, GA; and by eight grandchildren, several cousins, and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Memorial service is planned for Minneapolis, when Anyes Eames is interred beside her beloved Earl. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation, 5 Cambridge Center, 8th Floor, Cambridge, MA 02142.
