2006 - The Year in Review
As reported in January, the League of Women Voters of Port Washington/Manhasset honored its longtime leader Rita Tanski at a fundraising luncheon at the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. State Senator Michael Balboni gave Nassau County an "F" and Suffolk County a "D" for emergency preparedness. North Hempstead town officials held their inaugural ceremony where Fr. Nick Zientarski of St. Mary's Parish delivered the invocation followed by a hug and a handshake from Supervisor Jon Kaiman. Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi began his second term amid speculation he might run for governor. Tony DiStefano, owner of DiStefano Landscaping, was honored by the Nassau County Council of Chambers of Commerce. Judy Jacobs temporarily blocked a bipartisan coalition formed to unseat her as presiding officer and to elect Roger Corbin. Jacobs changed her party affiliation of 50 years as a Democrat to unaffiliated. The MHS boys swim team captured the conference 2 title with an undefeated 8-0 record. The new superintendent of the Manhasset School District, Charlie Cardillo, answered a series of questions posed by SCA Executive President, Mimi Donohue. Helen Halpin McCarney captured the Ms. Senior America title in Las Vegas, victorious over a crowded field of state winners. Manhasset's David Patterson had his movie Love, Ludlow included in the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, then had it purchased by Sundance (one of only eight) to be shown on the Sundance channel. Tom Suozzi filed papers to explore a Democratic bid for governor. MHS boys' indoor track team won conference championship. Possible solutions to increased enrollment at Munsey Park School are the main topics at the school board meeting. A judge rules in favor of Jacobs unaffiliated party status. A LI lacrosse players memorial at Farmingdale State was dedicated to those players who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
