The 5th grade girls (Connolly/George) won two more games this weekend bringing their record to 8-3. In a very exciting game against Our Lady of Hope of Carle Place, the girls fought their way back from six points down to win 19-18 in double overtime. Kelsey Connolly hit a jumper with nine seconds to go in regulation time to send the game into overtime. Natalie Stefan hit a foul shot in the first overtime to send the game into its final overtime. Jacklyn D'Alleva hit the game winning foulshot with 11 seconds to play. Tara Belinsky had a unique "double double" with 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Olivia Belinsky excelled on defense as did Erin Coleman who grabbed a key rebound at the end of the game. On Sunday, the girls beat Corpus Christi 22-8. Priya Alegesan, Stacey Rubertone, Sara Henry and Nicole George played excellent team ball.
This past Saturday Kevin Wilshere and Jorge Garcia's St Mary's 5th grade girls team defeated Our Lady of Peace 22 to 18. Meredith Wilshere, Emily Sears, Jenny Cook, Caitlin Gleason, Angela Shapiro all scored for St Mary's. Riley Garcia, Lizzie Bunger, Sydney DeHaan and Kelly Kenlon contributed with outstanding defensive play.
Coach Bob Hart and Jim Crosson's 5th grade girls team came away with a victory on Sunday with a 40 to 30 win over Notre Dame from New Hyde Park. The offense was led by Emily Koufakis (17 pts.) and Ally Hart (8 pts.). Abby Kurcharczyk played extremely well at point guard and Haley Crosson has another impressive defense performance holding down the other team's strongest player. Julia Glynn's hustle forced several big turnovers for St. Mary's. Sydney Young and Morven Whalley continued to impress with a lot of big rebounds. Emily Papa and Christina Ottiviani played hard both offensively and defensively. The team has won one five out of its last six games and is now 6-4 and looking forward to a strong finish to the season.
