Monday, Oct. 2, Sands Point Golf Club was the site for the Kevin R. Murphy Memorial Golf Classic. Over 75 golfers from as far away as Syracuse and Rhode Island traveled to Long Island to pay tribute to Kevin whose life was unexpectedly cut short at the age of 51.
Born in the White Plains and raised in Manhasset, Kevin attended St. Mary's High School in Manhasset, Bucknell University and Saint John's University Law School. In addition, Kevin held a masters degree in taxation.
Proceeds from the day will be used to develop a memorial fund and scholarship to benefit the students of Saint Dominic Schools, Oyster Bay.
Commenting on the event, Kevin's wife, Kathy Murphy of Locust Valley stated, "Kevin loved golf: not so much for the game, but because he loved the time with his family and friends on the course. Today is a wonder tribute to the many wonderful friends Kevin had from so many walks of life."
In addition to numerous raffle and give-a-way prizes, golf prizes were awarded to Kathleen and Robert Grant (Huntington), Richard McSherry (Plandome), Steve Perry (Rhode Island), Keith Fell (Garden City), Kevin McAndrews (Garden City), Meredith Frey (Garden City) and Myles McHale (Syracuse.)
The 50/50 raffle was won by Chris Murphy, Kevin's brother. Upon learning it was his winning ticket, Chris donated his proceeds to Monsignor Alesandro, pastor Saint Dominic's, Oyster Bay.
Tournament Co-chair Michael S. Grant of Manhasset was pleased with the day. "So many people came together to honor Kevin. He would never have liked all the attention around him. However, with his loss, it is comforting to know a fund has been established to help future Saint Dominic students." Kevin was always doing for others. He was involved in the Interfaith Nutrition Network, CYO programs, Saint Dominic School Board and Committee to develop sports fields for students.
Special thanks goes to the many individuals who contributed sponsorships, especially Brian Sheehan, Merrill Lynch Garden City Branch and the Brennan Family.
Donations for the Kevin R. Murphy Memorial Fund are still being accepted and can be sent to The Kevin R. Murphy Memorial Fund, 27 Fourth Street, Manhasset, New York 11030.
