Saturday, Nov. 11, marked the 16th year that Manhasset seniors have come to the high school gym to receive influenza and pneumonia immunization. This year 414 of them were vaccinated.
This annual health - and social - event is made possible by an unusual partnership of Nassau County agencies, Manhasset institutions and organizations, and by the efforts of almost 60 volunteers.
The Manhasset Public Library, the Chamber of Commerce, Community Care of Manhasset and the Senior Citizen Advisory Board all contribute essential parts of the flu shot program. The Manhasset Press gives generous space to inform and remind our residents of dates and times they need to know.
Nassau University Medical Center and the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs provide the vaccine and medical supplies, as well as important administrative and medical support.
This year, however, we'd like to extend particular thanks to our very first partner in this project, the Manhasset Public School District. Our program is not an easy fit into the very busy autumn schedule of the high school. But, beginning with Don Harkness in 1991 and continuing with Superintendent Charles Cardillo, we have had the strongest backing for the Senior Citizen Flu Shot Program and full cooperation in making available what is a perfect site for it.
Special appreciation must go to Armand Markarian, director of buildings, facilities and grounds. An extremely able administrator, he is as kind as he is competent, and a real problem-solver; his good offices made any problems with scheduling, parking, etc. evaporate. We are extremely grateful for his encouragement and support.
