On Thursday, Nov. 9, the Manhasset Girls Varsity Swim Team competed in the section eight state-qualifying meet at the Goodwill Games Aquatic Center.
"This day will go down as one of the great ones in Manhasset swimming history," proclaimed Coach Matt McGrane, after witnessing the incredible performance displayed by the girls. At the state qualifying meet, seven swimmers from MHS, set two new County records, four new school records, qualified five swimmers for States, swam two All-American Consideration times and all performed personal bests.
In the meet's first event (200 Medley Relay) the quartet of Whitney Quackenbush, Samantha Reiss, Chrissy Brodt and Chrissie Gotimer shattered a 21-year-old Nassau County record by posting a winning time of 1:52.79 to qualify for the New York State Championships. This time is an All-American Consideration time!
Senior Chrissy Brodt qualified in the two individual events, the 200-yd freestyle and 100-yd freestyle. She swam a season best 1:56.77 to qualify for States in the 200-yd free for the fifth consecutive season. In the 100-yd freestyle, she defeated the county champ, Carolyn Geller from Great Neck South to qualify for her third consecutive State championship in this event by swimming a 53.99.
Senior Chrissie Gotimer also upset the defending county champ from Great Neck South in the 50yd freestyle. Her personal best time of 25.03 earned her a trip to States for her first individual event.
The MHS team continued their winning ways in the 200-yd freestyle relay, by placing first in the event to qualify for the NYS State Championships. The relay team of Elizabeth Henry, Chrissy Brodt, Chrissie Gotimer and Whitney Quackenbush set a new Nassau County record in a time of 1:40.20. This time is an All-American Consideration time.
Two Additional school records were broken at the State Qualifying meet. Junior Samantha Reiss improved her record time to 1:10.75 in the 100 yd breaststroke.
The 400-yd freestyle relay team of Elizabeth Henry, Chrissie Gotimer, Whitney Quackenbush and Meghan Shea set a school record in a time of 3:48.17, also earning All-County status.
Individual personal bests include: Whitney Quackenbush 29.80 in the 50-yd backstroke. Allison Haspel 1:13.37 in the 100yd breaststroke. Meghan Shea 26.52 in the 50-yd freestyle. Elizabeth Henry 2:01.14 in the 200yd freestyle and 25.66 in the 50-yd freestyle.
