Following the national elections of Nov. 7 the Manhasset Press received complaints from residents that their long established polling places had been changed causing much confusion. Some residents accustomed to voting at Munsey Park Elementary School were turned away, sent instead to Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club or town hall while others at the elementary school voted as usual. Some residents accustomed to voting at town hall were rescheduled to vote at the firehouse on Bayview Avenue to make room for those additional voters from Munsey Park now voting at town hall.
According to the board of elections, space restrictions at the elementary school were brought to their attention last year. Around March the board of elections investigated possible sites, such as the Munsey Park Village Hall, that would be convenient to everyone, but, they said, for various reasons the space was denied.
Change notices were mailed to residents at the end of August, Scott Milano, Nassau County Board of Elections, stated, informing residents where to vote. The notice also indicated the assembly district (AD) as well as the election district (ED) one needs to know on Election Day. "We usually don't hear complaints until Primary Day, Sept. 12," Milano explained, "because those polling places are the same locations as those for the General Election on Nov. 7."
The election district corresponds to a voting machine, Milano said, and there are 1,143 election districts in Nassau County. There are approximately 14 election districts in Manhasset located at various polling places: Bayview Avenue fire house; Fire house behind Macy's; Plandome Village Hall; EOC Center on High Street; town hall; Shelter Rock School; Munsey Park School; and Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club.
"The most important thing," Milano reiterated, "is to check your voting card for the election district and polling place."
