Gale force winds on Sunday, Oct. 29 did not discourage CSM from hosting another successful Safety Day. This annual event serves to educate residents and raise awareness of the need for better pedestrian safety in Manhasset. Having reverted to the scheduled rain date, attendance was not as high as had been hoped but the enthusiasm was nonetheless very high from those guests and volunteers who braved the wind and cold temperatures to support CSM.
Many officials who were invited to the event made the grand effort of being present on a windy Sunday afternoon with several traveling quite a distance to be there. Those present included Assemblyman Tom DiNapoli, Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Councilman Wayne Wink, Councilman Fred Pollack, Town Clerk Michelle Schimmel (in Halloween costume no less!), Commanding Officer of the NCPD 6th Precinct Inspector Jay Caputo, Superintendent Charlie Cardillo and Munsey Park Principal Dr. Jean Kendall. CSM would like to thank those officials (as well those unable to attend) for their ongoing support of the efforts of the coalition.
Once again, the American Legion and Manhasset Boy Scouts did the honor of an opening flag ceremony followed by America the Beautiful sung by Scott Wilson.
In its second year, Safety Day has expanded to focus on many aspects of safety beyond pedestrian and motorist safety as CSM invites all interested community groups to participate in the day. Volunteers from the Manhasset-Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department brought the Fire Safety House and demonstrated to children and adults alike how to exit a house fire. The children also had the opportunity to climb into the pumper fire truck and ambulance that were brought to the scene. "Buster" the school bus from Huntington Coach Company was a popular draw for the children and the bus company offered tips and literature about bus safety to families. Audiovox was on hand to demonstrate after-market technology used to prevent incidents of children being backed-over by vehicles including a reverse camera and bumper sensors.
While the re-scheduling meant that car seat safety inspections had to be postponed, those who made appointments and others who are interested can call the NCPD to make another appointment at 573-6670.
The many individuals, groups and businesses that support CSM are credited with making the printed educational supplies and CSM car magnets available for distribution throughout the year in our schools, scout troops and for the general public. Merchants graciously donated prizes for the successful raffle. Visit their businesses as identified by the CSM logo displayed on their entrance doors. A special thanks goes also to the sponsors of the event: Hierarchy Architect & Design, Nancy H. Morris State Farm Agency, Americana Mortgage Group and the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce along with hosts for the event, the Manhasset Park District.
CSM's efforts to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment and respond to the safety concerns of residents will be ongoing. The coalition will continue to work at raising awareness and educating residents, work with the 6th Precinct to ensure consistent enforcement of traffic laws, and work with town and county officials to create changes to the streetscape that will enhance the safety of the area for pedestrians.
