One hundred and twenty Manhasset soccer players entered, played in and enjoyed Manhasset's first annual Score for a Cure Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 23. Despite threatening clouds and a light drizzle, the soccer players competed in 4x4 20-minute games for age group championships on the Manhasset High School turf field. The boys versus girls events were some of the most engaging matches to watch. The fifth/sixth-grade boys vs. girls match was won by the girls and there was quite a celebration. High school and middle school students from the Manhasset community came out to volunteer or simply watch the games.

Christian Iordanou, Brian Sternemann, Christina CasaNova, Alicia DeMarinis, Angelika Iordanou and Megan Tenet, founders and organizers of the event, worked all summer to develop plans for the event. Sponsors for the event included The Manhasset Soccer Club, Manhasset Sporting Goods, Villa Milano and the Manhasset High School Outpost.

All Manhasset Travel Soccer players were invited to help raise money to find a cure for myasthenia gravis. A member of the Manhasset Lady Jaguars, Manhasset Girls U-16 team was suddenly struck by this disease two years ago. The members of her team were deeply affected and wanted to help her fight the disease. Members of the Lady Jaguars, with the assistance of the Manhasset High School Boys Varsity Soccer team, successfully launched what will likely be an annual event in Manhasset. These six teen-age soccer players, with the help of their friends and community, were able to raise $1,500 to help their teammate and they did, in fact, Score for a Cure!
