Dorothy Louis Irish

Dorothy Irish passed away peacefully on Aug. 27 in Walnut Creek. She was born Dorothy Carola Louis on Jan. 13, 1911 and raised in New York City by parents Otto and Carola Louis. She graduated from the Lincoln School in 1928 and in 1932 graduated summa cum laude with a BFA from NYU. She continued her studies at the renowned Arts Students League, NY. She met John Stedman Irish and was married in 1936 at the Riverside Church in New York City before settling on Long Island. A lifelong member of the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA), Dorothy was fortunate to have a long and fulfilling career as a talented painter. She won the Beaux Arts bronze medal for mural painting design, and her work was accepted in numerous juried art shows. She was a member of the Manhasset Art Association. Following her husband's death in 1974, Dorothy relocated to California, continuing her involvement in the arts by joining the Rossmoor Art Association and setting up her easel facing Mt. Diablo. Her family will honor her passion for the arts by sponsoring scholarship funds through the NAWA. Dorothy will be remembered by her family and friends as a vivacious, colorful woman, who maintained a positive spirit and exhibited true joie de vivre throughout her life. She was predeceased by her husband, John, and her sister, Helen Van der Kogel. She is survived by her cherished daughters Leslie Haines of Rio Vista, CA and Lynda Hay (Robert) of Orinda, CA; granddaughters Dayna Birkley (Tairy), Alix Gade (Bob) and Devon Hay, and great-grandchildren Logan and August Gade. Genevieve Mangurian Roubian of Manhasset, died on Sept. 2, 2006. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. V.S. Roubian; loving mother of Dr. Armen Roubian, Mr. Robert Roubian and Dr. Paul Roubian; and cherished grandmother of Susan, Cheryl, Deborah Ann, Daniel and Joan Marie. Arrangements were made by the Fairchild Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Blvd., Manhasset. Funeral service was held Sept. 7, 2006 at the Congregational Church, Manhasset. Interment followed at Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
Thomas G. Gleason, Jr., of Orient, died at his home on Friday, Aug. 25, 2006 at age 83. He was a longtime resident of Manhasset, from roughly 1960 through 1992. He was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on December 18, 1922 to Thomas G. and Catherine (nee Foley) Gleason. He served as a Lt. j.g. in the United States Navy during World War II and later graduated from Columbia University where he received a degree in chemical engineering. He was president of Swemco, Inc., a chemical engineering firm based in Manhattan where he developed an international reputation as an expert in air pollution control and emission analysis and prevention. Surviving are his wife, Barbara (nee Armstrong); children, Thomas G. Gleason, III of New Suffolk, Sean Gleason of Modesto, California, David Gleason of Manhattan, Andrew Gleason of Queens, Nancy Rice of Glen Head and Stephen Gleason of Manhasset; a brother, Robert Gleason of Toms River, New Jersey and sisters, Eileen Carcaterra of Riverdale and Liz Hoobs of Grass Valley, California; three step-children, 10 grandchildren and five step-grandchildren. Friends were welcomed on Tuesday at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold where vigil prayers were conducted that evening. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church by Rev. Monsignor John A. McGuire assisted by members of the Ministry of Consolation. Interment, with military honors, followed in the Calverton National Cemetery.
