All Americans should be very much concerned about the outcome of the war in Iraq, whether you are for or against it and I hope there is no willingness by any American to lose this war for political or other reasons. Mr. Theodorsen (Letters to the Editor, July 6) fails to make any suggestions as to how we get out of this mess he said was caused by Bush.
The American people, through their elected representatives in congress, voted to go to war in Iraq and that is not going to change while Bush is in office until 2008. Even a timetable for withdrawing our troops, proposed by some presidential hopefuls, was overwhelmingly voted down. Therefore, it is very important for our country to pull together with all our will and might in order to keep our nation safe in this very difficult worldwide war against terror.
All the harsh criticism suggesting that Bush lied, the war was a mistake, pre-war information distorted, as well as other anti-war rhetoric by some high-powered people in our congress, contributes nothing constructive whatsoever to America's effort in trying to win the war, which should be our main objective. On the other hand, it does aid and abet the enemy in several ways. It not only emboldens the enemy, it gives them the impression that as time goes on we will become divided, lose our resolve and, like Vietnam, pull our troops out, which would be a major victory for the Al Qaeda. It also helps their recruiting efforts, prolongs the war and has a tremendous effect on the morale of our troops who deserve and need our full support.
Therefore, there are many compelling reasons why we should "circle the wagons" if we want to defeat an enemy in a war unlike any before it. The enemy wears no uniform, is all over the globe and represents no country. They, no doubt, are already in the US and maybe in our own neighborhood, using our freedoms for the destruction of innocent people and our way of life which we cherish so much. We have paid a high price for getting Iraq to where it is today, so we can't walk away and let Iraq disintegrate with the terrorists in the wings and allowing chaos to resume. If we all pull together, I have no doubt we will bring these barbarians to their knees and the sooner the better.
