Growing up in Manhasset many high school athletes play, train and dream of being named a NCAA Lacrosse National All-American, yet only a few ever achieve this national recognition. This year when the NCAA Division III season and National Tournament came to a close, Kate Donoghue of Plandome, playing for Bowdoin College, was selected by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and US Lacrosse to be a member of the National All-American Women's Lacrosse Team.
Attacker Kate Donoghue had a lethal junior season and was Bowdoin's top scoring threat. Her 62 points with 52 goals in 2006 are the most points ever by a Polar Bear in a single season and the most goals ever since 1986. Donoghue was second in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in goals scored and proved to be very efficient tallying on .545 percent of her shots. The NESCAC Women's Lacrosse competition includes five of the top 10 D III women's teams in the country, including traditional powerhouse rivalries Middlebury, Williams and Amherst.
Junior Kate Donoghue earned her third team attack selection by leading the nationally ranked number five Bowdoin College Polar Bears through the season to the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament where the Polar Bears lost 11-9 to Middlebury College in the elite eight. In addition to All-American honors, Kate Donoghue was selected by US Lacrosse and the IWLCA as First Team All-Region and Second Team All Conference as a junior. Joining Kate in national selections were two Bowdoin teammates. Looking ahead to her senior year, Kate will close out her college career as captain of the Bowdoin Women's Soccer Team in the fall and captain of the Bowdoin Women's Lacrosse Team for the 2007 campaign where she and her teammates are gunning for the NCAA DIII National Championship. Congratulations and good luck!
