  • Sports: On the Bay

Craig Albrecht, Port Washington YC, has really been tearing up the fleet - he won all six of his races at the fifth biennial New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport. The regatta, which started on Saturday, July 15, has about 161 boats competing and will be filling nine straight days with a variety of competitive sailing choices. The event's unique split-racing format makes it a popular draw, allowing sailors to customize their competition experience with handicap racing in the first half of the week (July 15-18) and/or one-design racing in the second half (July 20-23). An Around-the-Island Race, open to all entrants, takes place mid-week (July 19) and is scored separately. In addition to Albrecht, there are local sailors competing this year: Mario Fichera, Freedom, Port Washington YC; John Thomson, Infinity, Manhasset Bay YC; Ralf Steitz, Nimbus, US Merchant Marine Academy and Manhasset Bay YC; Louis Nees, Out of Reach II, Port Washington YC; and Sandy Lindenbaum, Promise Kept, North Shore YC. Steve Benjamin, who frostbites on our bay during the winter months, will take the helm of Bob Towse's Blue Yankee, and with Towse as navigator, will go head - to - head with four boats in his class. Time will tell if Albrecht can maintain his lead - there's still a lot more racing so stay tuned ... For those of you wanting to vicariously experience the race, T2P TV will produce video clips at 9 p.m. each night at www.t2p.tv. FULL STORY
