I guess the Town of North Hempstead Building Department internal investigation is not very newsworthy since the story was on page 18. It should have been the cover story since it affects all of us.
It was not surprising to hear that the DA is investigating the building department. Just look around and see what kind of houses they have allowed to be built in our beautiful town. This group of inspectors has allowed certain builders to come in and change the landscape of our neighborhoods forever.
I recall that when I renovated my home 14 years ago, the building inspectors were on the site at least once a week. They made sure that everything was to code and then some. This new group of inspectors have either become lax or greedy.
I live across the street from two large homes which are only five feet apart. One of the homes does not have a backyard, the air-conditioning unit is in full view of the street and LIPA was allowed to put the electric meter and wiring in the front of the house. This would never have been allowed in the good old days.
I would certainly like to find out how all of this has come to be. I hope the district attorney's office will find out and put an end to this problem.
