Although the weather was ugly, Manhasset's rowing certainly wasn't as they took home seven medals out of their 12 boats entered in the NYC Sprints on April 22. Over 100 boats and 17 teams endured cold temperatures and a steady downpour in what could be a preview for the LI Championships in two weeks.
The boys novice four won the first medal of the day when they overtook an opponent whose boat was halted a few meters short of the finish line. The boys freshman eight dominated their heat finishing 30 seconds before their nearest competitor. The freshman boys will be a strong contender for the LI Championship as they hope to continue the success of this weekend.
The girls lightweight four, girls varsity four, boys junior varsity four, and boys varsity four all won silver medals in their heats. The girls varsity lightweight eight took on Poughkeepsie High School in the last race of the day. Manhasset took an early lead and pushed away as they won decisively with a boat that consisted of mostly freshmen.
Manhasset rowed very well at the NYC Sprints against many opponents that they will see this coming weekend at the New Jersey Rowing Scholastic Championships in Cherry Hill. Last year, Manhasset's girls novice four won the Bill Bennett Memorial Cup awarded to the New Jersey State Champion in the respective event. Because of the depth and strength of this year's freshmen, Manhasset will enter a freshman eight and hopefully bring home the McCann Cup.
