The Junior League of Long Island is sponsoring two important community events on Saturday April 29 at 8 a.m. and is inviting local residents to participate. The first of these, a Community Build Playground Project, takes place at the Manhasset/Great Neck EOC. The center is located at 65 High Street, Manhasset, across from Whitney Pond Park, off Community Drive. All who are interested in helping to build this beautiful new playground please contact Maureen Catallo at 570-2268. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community or allow children (15 years and older only) to obtain community service credits.

The second important event, the Junior League's Kid's in the Kitchen program, takes place at the Manhasset/Great Neck EOC on April 29 between 1 and 3 p.m. All families are welcome to participate in this educational/interactive event that promotes awareness of childhood obesity and nutrition. There will be hands-on activities for nutritional awareness, and exercises kids can incorporate into their daily lives. Space is limited on a first come-first serve basis, so contact Dee Maleno at 365-4908 to attend.

Nearly one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight and childhood obesity has been shown to be the leading cause of many health issues including pediatric hypertension, Type II diabetes and coronary heart disease. The Junior League of Long Island is sponsoring these events as a way to give the children and families in our community the tools they need to make nutritious eating decisions and healthy lifestyle choices.

Other community sponsors and participants include Whole Foods Markets, Manhasset; Maria Dello, Certified Nutritionist; Deanna Durso and Steven Panzic of Power Ten Fitness Club, Port Washington; Dr. Mary George, Distinctive Dental Services, Great Neck. To participate in building the playground, contact Maureen Catallo at 570-2268. To attend the Kid's in the Kitchen program contact Dee Maleno at 365-4908.

Come out and join other residents in helping to build a healthier and active community.
