James C. Sheridan, 83, of Manhasset, died peacefully at home on April 15, 2006, following a courageous battle with metastatic cancer. Mr. Sheridan retired as Senior Vice President and Loan Originator of the Apple Savings Bank.
Mr. Sheridan was born in Long Island City in 1923 to James C. and Kathryn Hayes Sheridan, who later moved to Manhasset, where they lived the rest of their lives. Jim attended LaSalle Academy in Manhattan before enrolling as a freshman at the University of Notre Dame in September 1941. His stay there was interrupted by WWII, during which he proudly served his country as an army sergeant in the 38th Police Military Battalion, stationed in Scotland, England, France, Belgium and Germany. After the war he returned to his beloved golden dome, where he was awarded a BA degree in 1947. In September 1949, he married Noreen Rooney of Manhasset. The couple settled in Port Washington, where six children were born to them. Resettling in Manhasset some years later was a natural choice, as both had long considered Manhasset home.
Over the years, Mr. Sheridan served on and was active in several organizations, including the American Legion and numerous real estate and mortgage-related organizations, on all of which he served as officer at one time or another. He was an usher and active member of St. Mary's Parish, Manhasset. He was also Class Notes correspondent for Notre Dame Magazine for an amazing 30 years, never missing a deadline and always having some news of interest to report.
Mr. Sheridan is survived by Noreen and six children, Cara (Joseph) O'Donnell, formerly of Manhasset and now of Acworth, GA; Susan (Michael) Timko, Charlottesville, VA. Maura (Terrence) Connolly of Manhasset; Maryla Blum of River Forest, IL; James C. (Diane) of NYC and Montauk, and Honore (Paul) Iloy of Gaithersburg, MD. Seventeen grandchildren also survive their beloved "Da:" Keelan Cathey (Brian), Drew, Devon and Conor (O'Donnell), Chad, Peter, Keenan and Matthew (Timko), Catherine, TJ, Chris and Caroline (Connolly), Regina and Julia (Blum), and Ryan, Gavin and Kyle (Iloy). He is also survived by his sister, Joan Sheridan Mauro, of Florida and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Sheridan Halvey and brother, John F.X. Sheridan.
