Two patrols from Boy Scout Troop 97 of Manhasset competed in the 20th annual Klondike Derby at Muttontown Preserve.

The Wolves

The competition is reminiscent of the days when men raced by means of dog sledges across the frozen tundra in search of gold. Teams of four to eight Scouts act as Huskies pulling sledges on a fictitious expedition following a course outlined on a map. The map guides the team over a field course to 10 simulated "cities" where the Scouts demonstrate their proficiency in areas such as orienteering, fire building and first aid. The cities have names like Juneau, Kodiak and Yukon. Teams are awarded gold nuggets at each city based on their level of proficiency.

The Scouts in each patrol constructed their own sledges over the course of several weekends. Their hard work paid off. This year the Wolves Patrol lead by Patrol Leader Douglas Sostar and Assistant Patrol Leader Shivam Patel placed third. Members of the Wolves Patrol included Alexander Ardito, Justin DeSousa and Martin Donoyan. The WolvL leader Michael Bode gave a strong performance. The other members of the Wolverines Patrol included Michael Heenan, Sean McIntee, John Prufeta and Matt Woop. Troop 97 is very proud of the Scouts that participated in this year's event.
