Known as "P.J." to everyone, died March 4, 2006 of a brain aneurysm. He was 11 years old.
PJ was born September 26, 1994 and lived in Port Washington and Manhasset his entire life. PJ was a student at Munsey Park Elementary School and an alumnus of Our Lady of Grace Montessori School. We remember his love for life, freedom of movement, hunger for learning, joy of reading and commitment to family and friends.
PJ was a fifth-grader at Munsey Park in Mrs. Ellie Gordon's class. He was particularly active in Manhasset baseball, basketball and lacrosse. His friends spoke about how they knew PJ, the way he touched their lives, the music and History Channel he loved, basketball, lacrosse and baseball that he played and the way he was an inspiration to his friends. "He was a great kid," "He was so kind," were sentiments shared by all. Children remembered how he loved to have fun and what a good friend he was, how he tried to include everyone and would never make fun of another kid. In fact, many stories surfaced about PJ speaking up for children who were maligned by others. "We want everyone to remember him," said the students who suggested ways to memorialize him. Teachers and staff, too, know what a terrific young man he was.
P.J. was the son of Sandra and Padraic Furlong of Manhasset and the brother of Alessandra and Philip. He was the loving grandson of Vittoria and S. Joseph Domina of Port Washington and Mary and Padric F X. Furlong (dec.) of MA. He was nephew and godson of Patricia and Robert Felice of Ramsey, NJ and nephew of Victoria and Bill Gordon of Port Washington, Brenda and David Slottje of Ithaca, Jann and Myles Furlong, Carolyn and Edmond Furlong, Maria and Matthew Furlong of MA. He was the beloved cousin of Andrea, Andrew, Anna, Christian, Daniel, David, Elizabeth, Lianna, Maggie, Mairen, Michael and Sarah and a good friend to many.
Services were held at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 with burial at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington.
The P.J. Furlong Memorial Fund has been established to support youth sports and charitable causes that PJ cared for. For information, you can log onto www.pjfurlong.com or send an email to wlgordon@optonline.net.
