The uproar over a company from an oil-rich Arabic nation purchasing, from a British company, the rights to operate six of our nation's major seaports is, at first glance, quite alarming. But is it? I'm not at all sure that it would really make much difference. Why, for instance, were the British running our vulnerable seaports if, indeed, this is such a sensitive security concern? For sure, a thorough investigation is called for.
I believe that, as the ruckus dies down, the consequences of this sale will be found to be not so monumental as it now appears. It has, however, brought on an overwhelmingly negative response from the Democrat Congress, a majority of the Republican Congress and the public. The real question is why are Bush's previously rock solid supporters now suddenly ready to abandon him?
The answer is quite simple. Congressional midterm elections are only a short nine months away. It is generally conceded that unless conditions in Iraq (after three years of war) take an unrealistically positive upturn, his fellow Republicans had best "cut and run" soon if they hope to be re-elected in November. This potential Arabic "take over" is their opportunity to being their "bail out." Americans are solidly against having Arabs run our seaports. This fact bodes well for "cut and run" politicians. This is their grand opportunity. After years and years of "rubber stamping" Bush's programs, the time has come for Republicans to abandon ship or come November they may find themselves looking for another job. And I don't think Abramoff is hiring right now.
