For the third consecutive week I have had the unpleasant experience of dropping my children off at the Shelter Rock Elementary school where I have been met with horn blowing, arm waving, and belligerent remarks and screams because I refuse to pass the school busses which are parked in front of the school, Stop signs out and flashing, as children, young children, actively unload.
It is amazing to me that in their rush, people in our school community can be so disrespectful to each other and disregard, so willfully, the law.
And yes folks-stopping your automobile while a bus is idle with its Stop signs out and flashing-and its children unloading- is the law. It is the law on public streets and it is the law on school grounds. Therefore, when you pass our buses as you zip through the front unloading zone at the Shelter Rock Elementary School, you are breaking the law. You could be-and in my opinion should be-ticketed and fined, for putting young children at risk. I have addressed this with our principal and have encouraged him to please send another note home reminding parents that it is their responsibility to obey traffic laws during student drop off and pickup, and that for the safety and well-being of all of our children it would be appreciated if they would immediately refrain from passing buses engaged in the safe transportation of other children.
And by the way-to those of you who have insisted on yelling and leaning on your horn-or even worse-zipping past my minivan in an aggravated rage while your children are safely strapped inside, consider this: How would you feel if a curious youngster came running out between the buses to see why you were making such a commotion and in the process was critically injured?
Maybe it is time to start thinking a little more about others, and a little less about yourselves.
