We were deeply offended by Supervisor John Kaiman's remarks after Father Nick Zientarski, associate Pastor of St. Mary's, gave his blessing to the Manhasset community at the annual "Christmas" tree lighting ceremony on Friday Dec. 2. To paraphrase his comment, he told the audience to disregard the comments made by Fr. Nick. He then stated that "this is not a religious celebration."
Mr. Kaiman was insensitive, intolerant and disrespectful to the audience and, in particular, to Father Nick who was "invited" to give the blessing and listed on the program. In addition, it was obvious that he offended the predominantly Christian audience in attendance as well. Have we gone too far with all this political correctness? Even the Supreme Court and Congress open their sessions with prayer, so why should Supervisor Kaiman deny the Manhasset community a blessing at our public gathering? It was also unfortunate that our tree was referred to as the "holiday tree." This trivializes our sacred Christmas tradition that is a symbol of the birth of Christ.
I'm dreaming of a Christmas where we are free to celebrate as a community the spirit of a faith which honors our Judeo-Christian heritage and values of peace, love, and good will to all.
