On Oct. 8 the freshman/novice squad raced in the Head of the Housatonic regatta in Shelton, CT. Almost 100 teams, from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts, entered 588 boats to row the 2.7 mile course. MHS entered two novice men's fours, one women's novice four, and a freshman eight. The two men's fours rowed impressively to second and third place finishes in the torrential downpour. The women's four displayed the best technique in their heat resulting in a solid seventh place finish over four other crews, including St. Anthony's B boat. The freshman eight finished 11th out of the 19 boats entered and proved their local dominance by completing the course quicker than St. Anthony's A and B boats as well as Chaminade's C boat.
On Oct. 9 the men's and women's varsity squad raced in the three mile course of the Head of the Connecticut regatta in Middletown, CT. MHS entered a men's varsity four, two men's eights, and two women's eights. The men's boats rowed very well against a strong head current and head wind in the head-style race. Unfortunately the women's varsity eights races were cancelled due to rising river levels, strong currents/winds, and floating debris that included 20-foot trees.
The men's varsity will next row in the Schuylkill Banks Regatta in Philadelphia on Oct. 22, while the women will row in the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston on Oct. 23. This is a milestone for MHS Crew as the women's youth eight was one of only 57 nationally to be accepted into the prestigious regatta. Join us in cheering the girls on one of the seven bridges of the Charles River that they will be rowing under.
