Laurie Lee Prunhuber, formerly of Manhasset, passed peacefully at her home in Aptos, California, on Sept. 10, 2005 surrounded by her family. She died after a 20 month battle with cancer. She will be remembered for her smile, her laughter, her energy, her love for Gary and their beautiful Labrador Zorro, and her ever-present embrace of life.
Laurie is survived by her beloved husband Gary Spoon, her mother Dorothy Prunhuber, who still resides in Manhasset, her sisters Gayle, Lynn and Patti Prunhuber and their families as well as sister-in-law and dedicated nurse, Karen Lowe. She is also missed by her aunt, Barbara Saipe and cousins Nancy, Sallie and Hank Saipe. Her father Larry Prunhuber, a teacher at Manhasset High School and her parents-in-law Laveta and David Spoon, preceded her in death.
Laurie was born in 1953, and grew up with her three sisters in Manhasset, New York. She was the third, the small spunky one, and learned early to stand up for herself. She graduated from Manhasset High School in 1971, the University of Colorado in 1975, moved to California, and earned a graduate degree in social work from University of California at Sacramento. Laurie worked for 21 years as a social worker, first for Santa Cruz County Child Protective Services, and then for Rebekah Children's Services for 17 years. Laurie loved working with children, and had amazing communication skills with them.
Laurie met Gary Spoon, her soulmate and the love of her life, in 1990. They were a great pair, sharing so much love. Like Gary, Laurie needed to live on the coast. The fresh ocean air, walks on the beach, and enjoying the water were her lifeblood. Laurie loved rafting, the ocean, music, movies and dogs.
Laurie brought love, smiles and good counsel to her web of friends and relatives strung across the country. She kept up with everyone and never forgot a birthday. Because of Laurie's love, and our love of Laurie, this web continues.
A Memorial Celebration was held at Oakwood Memorial Chapel in Santa Cruz. Contributions may be made to Hospice Caring Project of Santa Cruz, a service which provided her and her family loving care.
