Angelo Marino Bellidora
|
Angelo Marino Bellidora of Old Brookville died from kidney cancer on Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 at Franklin Hospital Medical Center. He was 80 years old.
His daughter, Angela Anton, publisher of Anton Community Newspapers, remembered her father as a caring and giving man, with a great sense of humor.
Mr. Bellidora grew up in Greenvale and attended the Merchant Marine Academy after graduating from Roslyn High School. He served in the US Navy during World War II, in both the South Pacific and European theaters, achieving the rank of lieutenant. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart. During his tour in Germany, he met Sophia Chuma, a member of the Women's Army Corps, and the couple fell in love, marrying soon after the war. Settling in Old Brookville, Mr. Bellidora began his contracting business, where he continued to be active up until his death.
Mr. Bellidora was also active throughout his life in the Holy Name Society and worked as an usher in St. Mary's Church in Roslyn. Ms. Anton recalled with a smile that her father never missed an opportunity to encourage in his fellow man the generosity and charity he practiced. "St. Mary's still has collection baskets on a long handle," she said, "and my father would tease friends with a poke of the basket and a smile on his face to dig a little deeper into their pockets. He was very proud of the work he did with his church." He was also an avid reader who could often be found relaxing poolside in his backyard, engrossed in a good mystery.
Mr. Bellidora's well-known generous spirit extended beyond monetary benevolence. He spent a great deal of time with his three grandchildren, passing on stories and family history or taking them on outings to New York City.
Predeceased by his wife Sophia, Mr. Bellidora is survived by his daughters Angela Anton and Carole Bellidora, his sister Rose Morabito and grandchildren Jonathon, Kristen and Drew. Funeral arrangements were handled by Whitting Funeral Home of Glen Head. A memorial Mass was said at St. Mary's Church and burial was in Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury. Contributions in Mr. Bellidora's name may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY 10021.
