Eulalia Maria de Begonia Maria de Guadalupe Ross, 89, died Monday, August 26, 2005 in West Hartford, CT. Born in Mexico City to Jeannette (Lafitte) and Julian Azorlosa, she was affectionately known as Lala. Moving with her family to Los Angeles at the age of 3, she earned both her BA and MA in Spanish at UCLA, where she met her future husband, Richard Washburn Ross (1916-2004,) also a linguist. Eulalia began her career teaching Spanish and French at Beverly Hills High School. Married in 1941, the couple spent WWII in Annapolis, MD, where Richard was a Naval lieutenant and instructor of foreign languages at the US Naval Academy. After the war, Richard became one of the first simultaneous interpreters for the United Nations, and the family moved first to Westbury, and then to Manhasset, Long Island.
Eulalia returned to teaching, and taught French and Spanish at Manhasset High School for over 20 years. After retirement, she and Richard realized their dream of building a home overlooking the Mediterranean Ocean at Balcón al Mar, Jávea, Spain. In their later years they divided their time between homes in Sarasota, FL and Connestee Falls, NC. Their last home was in West Hartford, CT.
Eulalia is survived by her three children, Leslie A. Wherry of McLean, VA, Charles L. Ross of West Hartford, CT, and Lynn C. Fullshire of Shoreham, NY, and by eight grandchildren: Richard and Marsha Wherry; Anna Ross Berg, Fionnuala, and Charlotte Ross; and Paul, Ross and Drew Fullshire. A private ceremony will be held at a future date. Internment will be beside her husband at St. Anselm's Episcopal Church in Shoreham, NY.
Robert Emmett McGuire, 84, of Manhasset died suddenly on Sept. 3, 2005.
He was the beloved husband of Mary Joan, cherished father and father-in-law of Leslie and Tom Orofino, Julie and Bob McCarthy, Mary Jo and Richard A. Basile and Kathleen and Peter Hoff, and the loving grandfather of nine.
McGuire was a proud veteran of the 12th Armored Division of World War II and XPOW. He was the co-founder of St. Mary's adult choir.
Visitation was held at the Fairchild Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Blvd., Manhasset and a Funeral Mass was celebrated on Sept. 8, 2005 at St. Mary's RC Church in Manhasset.
