Last week this column reported on the Port Washington Yacht Club junior sailing program. This week the focus will be on juniors over at Knickerbocker YC. Their awards dinner was held on Wednesday evening, August 19.

Club members Jerry Morea and Donna Powers were the co-chairs for the junior program, with Head Sailing Instructor Jason Hill, assisted by Matt Hemler, Tom Matesich and Joel Basilion rounding out the coaching team. Danielle Powers and Carrie Morea were junior instructors for the summer and in addition to competing in regattas up and down Long Island Sound, they were responsible for a myriad of duties, one of which was introducing the youngest participants how to sail. After a great dinner, juniors, parents, family and friends gathered for the long-awaited evening. Jerry Morea spoke to the juniors first, then handed the mike to Jason Hill and his gang to present the awards, after which some hilarious "ha-ha" awards bestowed on deserving recipients.

There is still time to sign up for the Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship (Rolex IWKC). Organizers of US SAILING's regatta want to remind sailors that the deadline to enter the world's premier keelboat regatta is September 2. After that date, no other entries will be accepted. The 11th Rolex IWKC is scheduled September 17-23 at the Annapolis Yacht Club, in Annapolis, MD. To date, 40 international teams from four countries and 15 U.S. states have entered including defending Rolex IWKC champion Sally Barkow, of Nashotah, WI. The Notice of Race, Entry Form and additional information for competitors can be found online at www.ussailing.org/riwkc and www.race.annapolisyc.org/2005rolex. As part of the Rolex IWKC, there is a weekend seminar for young women juniors, called Next Step, and two juniors from Manhasset Bay have been accepted into the program. Danielle Powers (KYC) and Louise Browning will attend. Report to follow at the conclusion of the event.

The Storm Trysail Club does a lot more than just sailing. They are very pro-active when it comes to safety. A recent release highlighted the club's efforts to education junior sailors about safety at sea. Under the stewardship of Commodore Rich du Moulin, the Storm Trysail Club is expanding its Junior Safety-At-Sea seminars which have been such a big hit with the kids. "The Storm Trysail Club introduced these seminars formally after an incident where informal training, provided to Larchmont Yacht Club juniors, was instrumental in the saving of a junior sailor's life after she went overboard in a junior big-boat event," said STC Commodore and Larchmont Yacht Club member Richard du Moulin. "That's when we realized it's never too early to introduce safety at sea." Sending a powerful message to the sailing community, the Larchmont seminar was made a requirement for participation in the Junior Sailing Association (JSA) of Long Island Sound's annual big boat events-- Stamford Yacht Club's Dorade Series and Beach Point Yacht Club's Junior Overnight Race. On July 15 at Larchmont Yacht Club, 220 junior sailors, ages 14-17, participated. There were 26 boats to accommodate them and the 50 coaches who volunteered. Onshore activities included morning presentations by Kings Point Academy coaches Ralf Steitz and Rick Dominique covering safety procedures, particularly man overboard recovery, and big-boat organization and crew work.
