The 2005 Girls 12 and under softball team was made up of 13 players, eight of whom played in the Williamsport tournament in previous years. Erica Demitroff, Paige Pacent and Christina Gambino played on last year's 10-year-old team. From the 11 and 12-year-old team, Allison Brosky, Cara Cappellini, Elena Avalos-Bock, Kristen Leung and Emily Easton returned to play. Meghan Markham and Claudia Sbuttoni returned from two years ago. With the addition of newcomers Elizabeth Bourguet, Taylor Liberta and Tobi Simon, the team has the makings to be on par with the best of Long Island.
After winning the first game against Merillon under starter Kristen Leung, Manhasset faced off against a tough Albertson team. Manhasset took an early 5-3 lead heading into the fourth inning under some aggressive base-running. But by the bottom of the fourth, Manhasset fell behind 8-5 due to some clutch hitting by the Albertson team. In the following inning, Manhasset batters came alive, scoring 11 runs on some excellent hitting and continued speed on the bases. Heading into the last inning, Manhasset was up 16-8 and put its faith in starting pitcher Elena Avalos Bock. Overcoming a few hits and walks in the top of the sixth inning, Manhasset was able to hold on for the victory thanks to some spectacular defensive plays. Congratulations to Manager Phil Gambino, Coaches John Demitroff and Rocky Pacent, and all of the players on a fabulous and exciting game. Thank you also to official scorekeeper Joseph Gambino, who made sure of every minor detail in a smooth running of the game. Good luck to the team in the sectionals.
