The Coalition for a Safe Manhasset (CSM) has been meeting and working with Town of North Hempstead and Nassau County officials on several areas of concern in regard to safety on Plandome Road. The double yellow lines have been completed; the county is in the process of painting the parking lines and that project should be completed in the very near future. CSM is awaiting the final reports of Ray Ribeiro, Unit Head of Traffic Engineering for Nassau County, on the pedestrian survey and other CSM proposed safety considerations.
This being done, the next step forward would be the enforcement of the laws and for this step CSM turned to Inspector Matuza. The meeting was very productive and some of the suggestions shared were more police visibility in the area of Plandome Road; expanded education for pedestrians and drivers to include, but not limited to, high school driver education classes and elementary schools; an expanded police report to the Manhasset Press listing the number of summonses issued and for what infractions. CSM looks forward to a good working relationship with Inspector Matuza and his staff. Lisanne Altman recognizes and acknowledges the import work of CSM and has pledged her support in every possible way.
With everyone on board, CSM now looks to our community as a whole and its networking capabilities to encourage a safer Manhasset by obeying the New York State Laws and by practicing courtesy both as pedestrian and driver. The school year has ended and there are many more children walking on Plandome Road during the day. Reminder, NYS Law says pedestrians have the right of way.
